#1 Drayven27 Aug 16, 2014 18:17:14	I know that casting a ranged attack spell while in melee combat with someone causes you to attack at disadvantage. I can't however find anything about non-attack, ranged spells like Healing Word. Am I missing a rule somewhere? When it came up today I just made it trigger an opportunity attack but wanted to look into it for next week.
#2 silentdante Aug 16, 2014 18:23:54	what attack roll would you have to roll advantage or dissadvantage with healing word?   EDIT: also why would casting a spell cause an attack of opportunity at all by itself.  i could see if i had to bend down to cast spare the dead on someone while an enemy was standing next to me, but even then i think the opportunity attack rules are pretty solid. casting a melee attack spell doesn't grant dissadvantage, but according to how you did healing word it would cause an opportunity attack? i mean sure there may not be any rules, but i think thats because there arent supposed to be any rules cause it doesn't cause anything.

In the case of healing word, there ought most defnintely be no penalty at all if cast while in combat, since the whole point of the spell is that the cleric gets to heal an ally and make an attack in the same round. Interestingly, it also means that a spell like sacred flame, which require a save rather than attack roll, can be made without penalty when near an enemy combatant. In any event, casting a spell (or making a ranged attack) near an enemy combatant does not provoke an opportunity attack. Opportunity attacks are made "when a hostile creature that you can see moves out of your reach [or when you move out of the reach of a hostile creature that can see you, provided in either case, the moving party is not 'disengaging' as its action]".
