| #1thewoozleOct 06, 2014 13:10:50 | It's been stated that rules for Charging (defined as: running into a fight with an attack bonus) are not in the PH or Intro rules, but will be addressed later as an optional or advanced rule. I can accept that, but I have players asking me to make a judgement on how to charge almost every session. Any chance of getting a hint at what the official rules might entail or at least the mechanic involved?

| #2NoctaemOct 06, 2014 13:28:04 | Well I have no idea what they will do in 5e. Simply going from 3.x -> 4e involved some redesign.
What I would do is let the player charge into battle via movement and action as one attack action. Give them a +1 bonus to attack rolls for that action (so multiple attacks via the same action would be favored overall, which maintains that the fighter is better at battle) and that's it.
No need to make it fancy, no need to make it overpowered so players seek to charge at all times. One action to move + attack, +1 bonus to attack rolls. So you can take a move action and then charge for more movement + attack. Or if you want to restrict your players. Make it so you can charge, but it has to be the only action you can take on your turn. So you get to move + attack and that's all, no bonus action, no free action, etc..
EDIT: A limit to the minimum amount of distance that must be crossed in order to charge a target should also be added. it's not a charge if you just move 5 feet for example. Minimum distance = 15 feet? |
| #3melloredOct 06, 2014 13:27:30 | I would simply give everyone the charger feat for free. |

| #5YunruOct 06, 2014 13:30:54 | Thing is if you do thatbyou invalidate the Charger feat which does the same thing: If you dash you can take a bonus action attack, if you move 10 feet in a straight line before the attack you get a boost. Edit: Ninjas! Ninjas everywhere! Although if they're playing from basic rules the likely don't have a PHB. |
| #6IllithidbixOct 06, 2014 15:00:19 | Charge: As your Action move upto x1.5 speed in a straight line (at least 10') and make a single melee attack This does not count as taking the "Attack Action" for purposes of Extra Attacks, bonus actions etc. This replaces your regular move.
Seems the easiest way of doing it. Not convinced it's needed myself. |

| #8IllithidbixOct 06, 2014 14:53:45 | Yeah, you're right, I should have added "This replaces your regular move". Doesn't quite fit 5E though |
| #9YunruOct 06, 2014 15:02:18 | Why not just use the wording of Dash and just tag on the attack stuff (after changing the speed increase of course)? |

| #11slaughterjOct 07, 2014 9:57:56 | Also note the consequences of allowing everyone to charge versus abilities to make foes prone, if everyone can charge then those abilities to makes foes prone diminish significantly in value/impact. |
| #12dmgorgonOct 07, 2014 10:21:48 | Yes, they removed several standard combat actions that were once part of the core system and created a bunch of contrived feats and class abilities out of them.
I say you give the charger a bonus to hit or a chance to knock the target down and then impose advantage on all attacks against him until his next turn. That way the charger feat is still relevant. |

|
| #14BumamgarOct 07, 2014 12:48:55 | I don't get it. Why not simply make folks who want to 'charge' take the 'charger' feat? Seems to me like charging is already covered in the rules. |
| #15justiceleaguenowOct 07, 2014 13:42:14 | HOME GAME CHARGE: Any player as part of an attack action can charge up to 2x their base move. During this move if the character passes by an adjacent space (within 5') that is occupied by any hostile creature this move causes reaction (ATO) from the hostile creature(s). At the end of the charge the charging character can make one attack with Advantage. |

| #17LawolfOct 07, 2014 14:42:01 | Basic Charge Action
When you take the Dash action, you can make a melee attack at the end of your movement. You have disadvantage on this attack.
There, now anyone can charge, but only those with the charger feat can do it well. Running at someone and attacking is generally more difficult than moving up to them more slowly and making a more measured attack. The D&D charge rules have always gotten this fact wrong. |

| #19UchawiOct 08, 2014 2:58:13 | I have always seen charge as a gamble, or an all-out attack to get the first strike in. So it makes sense to me that the opponent may get a bonus to hit, but then has a penalty to defense. I would prefer a tactical option, versus a character or monster using it every round. |
| #20slaughterjOct 08, 2014 6:13:15 | Different game systems are all over the map on how charging is handled, but most generally allow it, with some modifier, often either a bonus or a penalty to hit, possibly a penalty to defense, and possibly a bonus to damage. Obviously whatever version is freely available should be less effective than the version provided by the Charger feat. Hopefully there will be some rules in the DMG for it, but in the meantime, it seems reasonable for GMs to come up with their own balanced house rule or to just say you can't do it without the feat. |
| #21AethererOct 08, 2014 6:23:40 | Isn't a Charge action listed for the Fighter option, Battle Master? I can't remember the details, as I only glanced over it when I had the book with me last week. |
| #22thewoozleOct 08, 2014 7:41:02 | It occures to me that a Charge wouldn't work as a Dash wi a bonus attack action, because then everybody would do it. It seems more resionable to me to have a Charge be more akin to the normal movement distance followed by an attack, but with the Dex mod as bonus damage. In a Charge, a character is running, but running for 60 feet or so would give the target time to get out of the way, so it has to be closer/quicker. Just having a move action followed by an attack wouldln't be a Charge, it would just be a move followed by an attack. If a charging character has a finesse weapon, would that mean getting the Dex mod for damage twice?

| #23HailroboniaOct 08, 2014 8:09:47 | I don't see why charging should be mechanically different from just moving your speed and make an attack and describe it as charging in. |
| #24BumamgarOct 08, 2014 14:47:11 | Exactly.
Not sure why folks think it makes sense to allow a double move + attack, without having to pay sone cost (like a feat) to allow it.
Besides, free charging cuts into the shtick of monks and other movement enhanced characters. |

| #26CooperjeraOct 08, 2014 19:44:00 | I have not covered all of the abilities in the MM, but creatures on the following pages have a charge ability: 38, 59, & 139. The Charger feat is similar in effect to the monsters abilities. |
