so I recently read an guide that stated if you go to level 8 as a life cleric and then change classes (multiclass) say to a fighter that once you hit character level 14 your divine strikes damage will increase to 2d8,

This doesn't seem correct to me.  Does anyone know if this is correct or not?

There's no such thing as "changing" classes in this game; multiclassing is like switching from lifting weights to doing cardio, in that nothing at all implies you "changed" and can't switch back or move to something new later.

That aside, look at the cleric class table. Divine Strike shows up at level 8 and 14 as a class feature. Your friend's argument is silly - it means that a character who dips one or two levels in every class would wind up with every class' scaled-up abilities.

When a class ability says "level", it's usually referring to the level in that class. Cantrips (and, in a sense, proficiency bonus) are the only things that I know of that scale directly with character level regardless of your actual class progression.

Well, I stand corrected. I was writing from memory and could have sworn I saw it on the class table (I was probably thinking about the paladin table's Divine Smite). It certainly does look like it advances by character level, which is weeeeeird.

EDIT: Coredump, below, found a better counterargument. See also the errata clarification regarding invocations, which were the biggest source of confusion between "level" and "[class] level" so far.

Ok, my original post was not worded great but I'm glad you guys at least understand what I was asking.

Just so we're clear I understand how multiclassing works but from the responses I am still not sure if divine strikes increases to 2d8 if I was a cleric 8 fighter 6.

As for your point about ASI and multiclassing, that specific rule is covered in the multiclassing section stating that you must have the levels in a specific class ( ie 4 fighter and 2 cleric would not give you 2 ASI)

But as far as I can tell ( and I don't have the PHB in front of me) the rest of points in this post seem valid but I am still not sure how this is meant to work.

Ya I am going to have to agree at this point.

Although the fact that I read this in a guide originally made me hope that there had been an official ruling on it.  Until proved other wise I will play it as an ability that only increases with cleric levels.

Thanks to everyone for their responses

In the Divine Strike section on page 62, the term "8th level" means "8th level in Cleric", because it is listed as so on the Cleric advancement table on page 57 as "Divine Domain feature" at level 8. This tells me that the term "14th level" in the same paragraph means "14th level in Cleric".

I agree that Divine Strike is based on cleric level.  It's specifically a subclass feature.

I think the only exception that uses character level instead of class levels are spells, but spell damage isn't listed in any particular class.  Spell damage is instead listed under each individual spell, and it isn't specific to any particular class.

Although the idea of lvl 18 [nonspellcaster]/lvl 2 warlock eldritch blasters with agonizing and repelling blast doing just as much as a lvl 20 warlock seems silly, so I houseruled that spell damage is based on spellcasting level + pact magic level.  So a lvl 18 wizard/lvl 2 warlock is a lvl 20 spellcaster.  A lvl 18 fighter/lvl 2 warlock is a lvl 2 spellcaster.

A few of my friends and I played with different character builds, and we came upon a lvl 18 fighter/lvl 2 warlock that can either use the Attack action to make 3 attacks for 1d10+5 (11) or 1d12+5 (12) per attack, or do 5 attacks for 1d10+5 (11) from magic, despite being a novice spellcaster at best.  So we tweaked it.  This is definitely a houserule.  I'm not stating this is anything the books support.  We felt it made more sense to tie spell damage to levels in spellcasting instead of character levels.  Considering a lvl 18 warlock/lvl 2 fighter can't make 3 attacks with an Attack action, it seemed to be better balance.
