Simple question regarding the second level Cleric Spell Spirtual Weapon. If you use Spiritual Weapon and it is in melee with a target, does that target gain disadvantage using ranged attacks? The question arose in a game and was hoping for clarifcation as its bound to pop up down the road.

Book isnt with me atm, but i can take a swing at this one.

Spiritual weapon makes a weapon fly around, but it is not a creature.  So, among other things it cannot make opportunity attacks or 'engage'  an opponent.   All it can do is change targets when prompted, and make a single attack each round.

It is a pretty solid spell as is.  Bonus action casting and no concentration required is pretty dang sweet.

PHB, page 205: "...you have disadvantage on a ranged attack roll if you are within 5 feet of a hostile creature that can see you and that isn't incapacitated."

Nothing in the description of spiritual weapon states explicitly, nor clearly implies, that the weapon created via the spell is a creature nor that it can see anything.
