Concentration and regaining spell slots (Warlock)

MY question pertain mostly to warlocks (as I am currently playing one).  If a warlock casts Hex with a higher level spell, which gives it a duration of concentration up to 8 hours or even 24 hours, will the warlock still get spells slots back while concentrating on this spell?  Or does the concentration either: not allow the warlock to short rest or not regain the spell slot that was used to cast the Hex spell they are concentrating on?

With such a limited number of spell slots I am thinking a Warlock can concetrate and get that spell slot back (why else have such a long concentration duration on the spell?), especially given how hard it might be to keep the concentration that long, given taking damage or other mishaps during adventuring.

Any thoughts?

Good question, I personally don't like setting a precedent for casting a spell followed by a short rest to regain that spell slot at no cost. So I'd say no, though I can't find any RAW reason why it would break concentration.

The limited spell slots are limited because you get them back with a short rest, if you rest you get your slots back so that problem is already 'solved'  no need to tag on another 'free'  spell, just my opinion.

It is exceedingly rare that a concentration spell have sufficient duration to last through a short rest. As such, I don't think there is any issue caused by allowing those few spells which do have concentration and durations longer than 1 hour to remain even while the spell slot used to cast the spell in question is regained, since it is made even rarer an event by the fact that only a few classes can recover spell slots after a short rest, and only one of them can do so more than once before having to take a long rest to regain any more spell slots.

It really seems like an edge case so rare as to not possibly have much effect overall.

There's no rule stating you can't concentrate on spells through short rests.    Indeed, I can't see why Hex or Hunter's Mark would be able to last 24 hours if they failed whenever you took a rest - it just doesn't make sense.

I am asking Wizard Customer Service to see if they can give any clarification on how the concentration rules and short rest rules work in a case like this.  I will update after I hear back from them to let everyone know the answer they gave.

Hmmm...  Sleep, wake up, cast Hex/HM with an 8 or 24 hour duration, immediately take a short rest, get spell slot back.... IOW get a 'free' casting of Hex/HM.

I think I would talk with my player and agree if he doesn't abuse the situation with things like the above.... I would allow it normally.

Seems kind of inaccurate to call it a "free" casting when it costs you an hour out of your day. At my table, for example, that is another random encounter chance meaning the cost is really time and possibly having more challenges between you and your goals

A second level wizard can already wake up, cast mage armor, and then rest for an hour to recover the spell slot and still have seven hours of mage armor.  This "exploit" isn't really related to concentration.

I have a completely useless update, and am quickly losing faith in the WotC Customer Service.  I sent my question to them:

My question has to do specifically with the Warlock spell Hex. When cast with a higher level spell slot Hex has a duration of Concentration up to 8 hours or even 24 hours. If a Warlock maintains concentration would this spell remain active in addition to regaining all spell slots after a short rest? So that after a short rest the Warlock would still be able to gain the benefit from Hex and have all spell slots available to cast other spells.

Thanks for helping me figure this out.

and this is the FIRST response I got:

Thanks for contacting us here at Wizards of the Coast! I'm happy to help with your question on spell slots and rests.

Taking a short rest does not restore your spell slots for the day, only a completed long rest. In order to have a completed long rest, you can't spend more than 2 hours doing light activity; you must also sleep. You will not be able to maintain concentration while you are asleep.

Really? Did they even pick the PHB up before answering my question?  Frustrated I sent a followup question, it was short and maybe not as nice as I could have been:

Warlocks restore spell slots after a short rest or long rest.  I realize you can't concentrate while you are sleeping, that is not the issue here.  Please respond.

And this is the SECOND response I got:

Thank you for getting back to us. On page 201 of the Player's Handbook under the heading "Spell Slots" it states "Finishing a long reset restored any expended spell slots."

Did they even read anything that I wrote to them?  I have sent ANOTHER follow up and hopefully get someone who is literate and/or has actually played the game to answer my question.

i will update once I get a rsponse that actually pertains to the question that I asked.

I know it is unintuitive, but customer service is not at all prepared to handle rules questions. They are just folks reading the book after someone asks a question and trying to help, not anyone that actually works on the rules of the game: especially since it is Wizards of the Coast customer support, not specifically D&D customer support
