concentration, hunter's mark, detect magic

Can a ranger who is concentrating on hunter's mark cast detect magic and decide *not* to concentrate on it? The idea would be that the ranger uses detect magic for a single round and doesn't let his concentration on hunter's mark lapse.

No. Casting a Concentration spell immediately ends any other spell you're concentrating on.
