Conjure Minor Elementals/Elementals

The last line in each of these spell descriptions is that the "DM has the elemental's statistics."

I assume these will be outlined in the upcoming DM's Guide? If so, what do we use in the meantime?

Are they referring to the Monster Manual? If so, what entry do we use for the Minor Elementals? Mephits?

If neither of these two, then where do we find the statistics?

Thanks!

Air, Earth, Fire, and Water elementals are in the Basic DMG available free for download.

All the other ones (Xorns, Mephits, maybe Magmins or Azers? All that good stuff) are in the MM

I believe some elementals are in the Basic DM PDF, and there are more in the Monster Manual. Remember that "elementals" refers not just to "true elementals," but to any creature with the elemental type.

I think you either summon a bunch of  mephits (CR 1/4 to 1/2), a gargoyle (CR 2), or an Azer (CR 2).  If enworld is correct, the next AP will be elemental themed, so I suspect conjure elemental and conjure minor elementals will get expanded lists of monsters.

So in the case where there are multiple elementals with a CR 2 for example, does the Conjurer select what they summon?

For example with Conjure Minor Elementals, the wizard can conjure 1, CR2 elemental. Would it be a Gargoyle, Azer, or the players choice? Or is it the DM's choice?

For 1/2CR we have Magmin, and all the different Mephits. Who chooses what the player gets?

For 1CR does the player only get a Fire Snake?

What 1/4CR elementals are out there?

For Conjure Elemental (CR5), a traditional elemental or a Xorn? Or how about a Salamander?

I like choosing, myself, because it allows for versatility, and the spells are fairly high level. It'd totally suck if you're facing a young red dragon and you blow your only 5th-level spell to conjure a fire elemental because the DM is a jerk or the dice don't like you

(though that potentially forces creativity, like using it to grapple the dragon. But still. Annoying!)

I agree with Aaron and Timborama that it should be the player's choice.  I could see limiting the choice in some way but only if the DM talked to the players ahead of time and provided some alternative critters.  For example, I am not big on evil clerics conjuring celestials, so give and strongly encourage a player with an evil cleric to have conjure fiend instead (it doesn't take much encouragement given how many fiends and how few celestials there are, and it uses the conjure celestial rules so the fiend doesn't turn on you if you lose concentration).  That being said, so far in 5e I am much more inclined to let PC's conjure  a wider variety of things than in the official spell descriptions (for example conjure minor elementals also can be used to conjure modrons of the same # and CR level as the elementals could be).  That might change a few books in, as I assume there will be more conjure spells, but minor chances in reality (that coincidentally occur when I read splat books) are not unknown in my setting.

I'm DMing for the first time since 2E, and this question, although not in play yet, has come up. How might a DM handle Conjure Elemental cast with a spell slot higher than 6th? According to the PHB:

When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 6th level or higher, the challenge rating increases by 1 for each slot level above 5th.

At 5th level, you conjure a CR 5 elemental, and there are 6 to choose from in the MM. Cast at 6th level, there are two. There are no elementals for 7,8 or 9 (jumping to Genies at CR 11).

Is there a method to scale? Would you be inclined to add another elemental to round out the total CR? There's precedence for this in Conjure Minor Elemental, but that may open the door to abuse (such as choosing to conjure two CR 3s instead of a CR 6).

Thanks for any input!

Personally, I say "wait." The player is free to use the rules as they are, and elementals will be appearing shortly, as the next rules module is (allegedly) all about elementals! So doubtless there will be some CR 7-9 elementals.

Until they, just have the PCs cast it as a 5th or 6th level spell. I highly advise against "multiple" elementals, unless you and your table breakdown the math from Minor Elementals and use that. In my opinion, 2 CR 3's are much worse to face than a single CR 6! Remember that things like the Treant and Galeb Duhr are given a high challenge rating, compared to other monsters of their CR, simply due to the fact they can instantly create two more copies of themselves!

Or! As Mellow said, talk to the table and agree to increase HP, damage, and potentially proficiency (depending on the CR). Maybe even altering things that are elemental-like, but not actually elementals, and make them elementals (instead of their usual type) summonable by the spell
