| #1cheshire42Jan 09, 2015 12:23:21 | Hello all,
I'd like to convert 4E characters to 5E. I'm not finding a lot of resources for this so far. Are there any official guidelines? Homebrew methods? Or is everyone just winging it?
thanks in advance, c42 |

| #8cheshire42Jan 09, 2015 16:12:50 | That's a valid question, Chris. The tl/dr answer is 'Everyone wants to play the new hotness... you know... with some of the old hotness.'
A bit more depth - some of the elements of 4E were enjoyed in the group. A lot of the cool races and classes don't exist in 5E, at least not yet. There's a lot to like and explore in 5E, but we've been playing 4E for over two years... giving that all up completely to get to a better magic system (for example) seems a mite... wasteful.
So, I'm trying to find a happy medium. :D |

| #10Ninja_FerretJan 09, 2015 17:00:27 | if you want to play the new hotness play the new hotness. Dont try to change anything with it. Maybe add in some rules of 4th into it. there are some options in the phb and dmg. |
| #11OoftaMegJan 09, 2015 17:07:03 | Whenever I've carried over characters from previous editions, I've just re-created the character using the new system's rules while trying to maintain the spirit of the old character. So use the new system's point buy, build legal classes and races, etc.
But ... yeah 4E is a very different system it may not be worth it. |

As suggested, I would pick a level, and rebuild the 5E character trying to mimic the concept of the 4E character. They are just very different games.
If you need/want help, you could post here for suggestions, but be warned, the more esoteric the 4E character, the harder it will be to match it.
Also, someone around here did a good job figuring out how the 'formula' for creating 5E races, so you might be able to use that to recreate the race of your PCs.

| #20Ganymede425Jan 09, 2015 20:21:07 | I had some trouble converting my own character over from 3.75 (Pathfinder). I previously had an Abberant bloodline Sorcerer, but he ended up being ported over as a Great Old One Warlock. As a noble that got his magic via a mysterious extraplanar entity, the transition actually worked out quite nicely.
My previous Barbarian-Rogue did not survive the transition. |
