A group of mages fighting it out could be fun to watch, or boring as heck. |

I don't see any rules on not counterspelling reaction spells. Since it uses the reaction it can only be done on a limited basis. I wouldn't allow wizard 1 to counterspell the counterspell counterspelling by counterspelling that counterspell because my ruling would be he would need to stop casting the first spell to do so but otherwise wizards looks fine. |

So you can cast a spell, have it countered, and then use your own reaction to counter the counter.
Of course, your burning though spell slots, but it's better then dying. |

| #9AshrymSep 10, 2014 10:31:33 | What's stopping you from doing it is the fact you haven't completed the spell yet that you started with. The criteria for the reaction is casting a spell. It's an interruption effect that occurs before the spell is competed. If you stop completing it to cast another counterspell you've stopped completing it to cast another counterspell. If you've stopped completing it then it doesn't complete. If it's not going to complete anyway there was no point in stopping it to waste a slot on a counterspell. The rules do not allow for casting 2 spells simultaneously regardless of which action type is being used.
I suppose a person could rule the first wizards stops casting, doesn't lose the slot, counterspells the counterspell, then starts his slot again, but of that were possible why wouldn't he just stop casting his spell, let the 2nd wizard waste his reaction and spell slot, and then start casting the spell again?
The similar example is the restriction on spells and bonus action spells being used in the same turn. That's clear there there are restrictions on casting multiple spells on the same turn even if it's not explicit to reactions.
I'll let you rule how you rule it, but I disagree that it's allowed by the rules as is based on the wording for the reaction criteria and don't see your ruling as RAW because the spell has not been completed when starting a new spell in such a case. |
