Two characters fight a creature. One character is a Ranger the other a Druid. The Druid wild shapes into an Elk, a large beast. The Ranger is behind the elk in a 5' wide hallway. The druid, or elk, is in a room but positioned to block the hallway. The creature they are fighting is in the room. Basically the elk is between the Ranger and the creature. The creature he is attacking is medium sized.
What kind of cover does the large elk provide for ranged attacks from the medium sized ranger?
Creatures grant half cover, is the book advice.
There is no rule for this..... you need to make a ruling based on the specific situation.
The book suggests that a creature will provide 1/2 cover, but I believe that is assuming all three are medium. Half is safe, but I could also see 3/4....
If you were a gelatinous cube i would say total cover.
As a large in between 2 medium creatures i might grant 3/4.
But if it was against small creature i would only give 1/2...cuz they can shoot right through your legs.
I rule that creatures grant half cover, regardless of size, justified by the fact that creatures are in constant motion during combat—presenting openings and opportunities over the course of a round.

3/4 seems too much to me. 3/4 is the equivalent of being behind a wall with tiny arrow slits. I mean, a large creature is *larger* than a medium creature, but that doesn't mean it provides more cover necessarily. Especially when the creature is an elk. An elk isn't all that much taller than a human, just much longer. I'd actually expect a medium sized fighter, if anything, to provide slightly more cover than an elk.
