The DMG states that a common magic item, such as a standard healing potion, should cost 100 GP and take 4 days to craft. Yet the PHB lists the sale price of a standard healing potion as 50 GP. Is this an exception to the rule, or do one-shot magic items get a discount on crafting costs? |
| #2AaronOfBarbariaDec 15, 2014 10:17:22 | A separate section of the DMG, specifically the section on buying and selling them, states that consumable items are usually half the value of permanent magic items - and while that doesn't specifically apply to crafting of magical items, Jeremy Crawford (the developer that all the developers have declared to be "the rules guy") said "It's up to the DM, but I would cut the crafting cost of most consumables in half." when asked if it should apply.
Also, the magic item values listed in the DMG should be taken as suggestions, especially because the DMG talks about adjusting the costs if your setting has magic items more prevalent than usual (like if you are playing in Eberron, where magical lanterns serve as street lights, minor magical items can be found basically anywhere in the world, and what equate to legendary items - like the lightning rail - are pretty standard things to see). |
