#1 langelli Aug 27, 2014 11:42:03	I've tried searching the forum and I couldn't find anything on this.   This question is about access to spell levels for cross class characters.   I think the easiest way to ask this is as an example.   If I have a level 10 cleric that then takes 1 level in Wizard he would now have the following spell slots:   4/3/3/3/2/1 and could cast up to level 6 spells.   Now as a Cleric he does not have access to level 6 cleric spells and as a Wizard he would only have access to level 1 Wizard spells.   Could this character scribe Fireball into his spell book (say from a scroll)?  Could this character prepare Blade Barrier a level 6 Cleric spell?   Is this guy now just as good at throwing fireballs as a level 11 Wizard?  That just doesn't seem right to me.
#2 CorwynnMaelstrom Aug 27, 2014 11:44:49	You prepare as your discrete class level.   So: Even if he could scribe fireball, he can't ever prepare it. He could not prepare blade barrier for the same reason.
#3 mellored Aug 27, 2014 11:47:19	^that   multiclassing gives you more spells. single class gives you higher level spells.   Note that you can scale spells up though.  Burning hands in a level 6 slot for instance.
#4 langelli Aug 27, 2014 11:47:41	I am an idiot, I clearly missed this in the rules.  The prior page is quite clear that you prepare the two lists separately.   Glad to have found that.
#5 Illithidbix Aug 27, 2014 12:54:28	I still think it's one of the trickiest details in the rules, I was fairly sure that was the intent but a tad unsure I reread it in detail and looked at the example.   Thankfully the example on page 164 is a very good one and helps explain it to doubters better than the wording: It clearly shows that a Ranger 4/Wizard 3 has the casting ability of a 5th level multiclass spellcaster, so they have exactly the same spell slots as a 5th level wizard (4x 1st level, 3 x 2nd level, 2 x 3rd level) However, it specifies that "you don't know any 3rd level spells, nor do you know any 2nd level ranger spells" despite having the 3rd level spell slots.   It's almost as if they're yelling out "You can't cast Fireball until you have five levels in Wizard!" *      *Or 5 levels in sorcerer or 5 levels in Light Domain Cleric, or 13 Levels in Eldritch Knight Fighter or... 14 levels in Arcane Trickster Rogue (if... I've read that right... ok maybe Fireball wasn't the best example...
#6 shivafang Aug 27, 2014 13:17:21	There is no actual rule that says this.  You have to look at the example they give.   This is a FAQ that has been asked many times becauses the rules as written don't match the example, but the example is the clear intent.  So don't feel bad if you 'missed it' - the wording is seriously unclear in this area.   * Light domain cleric gets fireball!?  (Flips open PHB) Z-OMG!
