Hi , maybe this has been asked before but i didnt find any clear answer . Everyone has its own interpretation.

I have a level 3 barbarian / totem warrior and i want to multiclass it fighter . How does the extra attack works ?

i found 3 differents answers :

1: since the barbarian and fighter have both the skill on level 5 when my character will have 5 TOTAL level ( barb + fighter = 5) i have extra attack

2:I need to have 8 lvl TOTAL(barb + fighter = 8)  to get extra attack.

3: i need to get lvl 5 in any classes to get it

4 : if i reach lvl 5 barb and multiclass it fighter i lost extra attack and regain it lvl 8.

Thank you to each person that will try to help me figure it out

( sorry for my bad english im french canadian)

When you reach the appropriate level in a class that grants the extra attack feature, you get an extra attack. And not before. The extra attack feature is not based on character level, but class level.

Reach level 5 in a class.  (i.e. barbarian 5/ ranger 3).

To get 3 attacks, you need to reach level 11 fighter.

(i.e. barbarian 5/ranger 5 would still only have 2 attacks).

Correct. Extra Attack is a class feature that specifically occurs at Barbarian, Monk, Fighter, or Rogue 5 (and a couple other classes through specific sub-classes or features).  You gain it when you reach the 5th Class (not character) level of any of those classes. If you start with 2 levels into monk and then go 5 levels into Fighter, you area  7th level character, level 2 monk and level 5 fighter. You gain Extra Attack when you reach your 5th level in fighter (which happens to be your 7th character level, but this has no bearing on when you gain the feature.) If you start with 5 levels into fighter, then multiclass 2 levels into monk, you new levels into monk do not remove the extra attack feature you have gained from your 5th level fighter. Multiclassing doesn't remove any features from any of your previously gained class levels. If you gain two sources of Extra Attack (IE Fighter 5 / Monk 5), you still only have the one extra attack. The features do not stack.
