In the DMG it says that if you want to create a new spell, 3rd level spells should deal 6d6 damage to multiple targets. But fireball is 3rd level and deals 8d6.
How do you handle this? Is it a mistake or am I missing something?
Cheers |
| #2MechaPilotMay 02, 2015 1:57:35 | It could be due to fireball's limited area of effect. A 20 foot sphere, assuming no on is flying or standing on anyone else's head, means you can only hit a maximum of four targets, and enemies aren't likely to be clustered that closely together (which means two or three is more realistic than four). |
| #3turriMay 02, 2015 2:13:04 | but fireball is a 20 feet radius, so that would be a a total of 45' sphere right?

| #6AaronOfBarbariaMay 02, 2015 2:29:38 | The developers made a comment that some spells, fireball and lightning bolt as examples, are intentionally given a boost because they are the iconic spells |
| #7Byakugan01May 02, 2015 2:35:52 | yeah they are the iconic spells and the 'epitome' of getting to be a 5th levil wizard.
Several spells break the damage guidelines slightly, for instance poison spray and witch bolt. But it is usually easy to see what the drawback was that allowed them to be a little stronger. |

@Aaron: That's pretty interesting, although I'd consider it a design flaw, cause it makes the game less interesting. People love those spells anyhow, so there's no reason to boost them. M biggest problem with this is that fireball and lightning bolt are not only iconic, but they are also the the least inventive ones
Anyway.
Thanks again |
