| #1newnewguymattNov 19, 2014 20:19:55 | I asked this in the "simple question" area but the answer led to more questions. I probably replied with a little too much snark, so now i'm feeling sheepish and don't want to belabor the point on the simple question forum. So here goes:
As Illusion spell levels increase, they get more complicated (minor illusion to silent image to major image and so on). When you get to mirage arcane, you are fully recreating the flora and landscape including smell sound touch (taste?) of a square mile area. In addition you can alter or even add structures. And, since the tactile element of the illusion remains even after it is discovered, I positied that you basically could wall yourself for safety in an inpregnable castle if need be and asked if that were true.
The answer I received was yes, but it was added it were only true if by castle I just meant a big square block of stone, implying that the structures had to be low detail. I don't understand why this would be the case. Given the complexity of recreating a forest or meadow or any other such natural setting, couldn't structures be fully detailed and furnished down to the last degree? I'm just curious on people's take on this. From a RAW point of view, it seems to me you could use mirage arcane to build a small city (unpopulated), ancient ruins, or a harbor that would last for 10 days, no concentration. What do you think?

Obviously, the DM may rule certain ideas too complex for the nature of the spell, but a castle seems entirely in-line with the spell's capability. |
| #3newnewguymattNov 19, 2014 20:51:51 | Perhaps if more time is spent casting the spell, more detail could be added (at the DMs discretion, of course). |
| #4OoftaMegNov 20, 2014 4:56:45 | I agree with the others, it just says create structures and gives no limit. |
| #5SorxoresNov 20, 2014 6:17:18 | Technically even with minor illusion there is no limit on the detail level.
By raw even with Minor illusion I could create a realist 3d image (similar to some street art you can find on Google : https://www.google.ca/search?q=realistic+street+art&client=firefox-a&hs=BFU&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&channel=nts&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=ZvVtVN-nKc-3yATKh4LAAw&ved=0CB4QsAQ&biw=1400&bih=651
Personally I love to use Minor illusion to create the picture of the environement behind the group, so any monster looking at the picture see the environement like if none of us was there, and unless they come close to investigate they will never see otherwise. If they come close to investigate, then the barbarian hidden bhind the illusion get advantage on his surprise attack and the rogue get a free critical hit.
So yes your Arcane mirage can create a castle as detailed as you want, but your DM might interprate

Find yourself sneaking around in a castle? Stand in the illusion of a statue, suit of armor, or whathaveyou. Need a quick hiding place in the wilderness? Make a boulder or thick bush and hide within it. |
| #9WizardVNov 20, 2014 19:45:31 | Regarding detail, there's nothing RAW preventing you from creating objects not only of great detail, but of facts you don't even know. Can I create a map of the dungeon we're about to explore? A mural of what the room will look like once I open it? A key shaped to open this door? A map of the region of the world we're in with a red dot where our party is? An image of this orcs boss?
Awhile ago I put together a questionaire like post I'd recommend everyone discusses with their DM prior to playing an illusionist. Being able to predict what will happen fosters creativity and makes the game more fun for everyone. http://community.wizards.com/forum/rules-questions/threads/4153351 |
