Heading back from Gencon and been talking/arguing back and forth with my friend in the car about some rule questions and scenarios. Both are two parts....1) is it technically mechanically allowed 2) would you allow it as a DM

First, using the battle master maneuver disarm, can you disarm a shield an enemy is using.

Seocnd, if a barbarian with the 6th level mindless rage ability has "charm person" successfully cast on him, can he choose to enter rage in order to cause it to become suspended if there are no other threats present.

Whats your thoughts. Again, is it mechanically possible AND would you allow either of these as a DM

First: this depends on both the DM, and the level of realism in the game. For example, in the real world, there are some shields that are strapped to the arm, and I would rule that those can't be disarmed. However, some types  of shields are only held by a handle, and those could be disarmed, because all you have to do is hit them hard enough or strike the hand holding them. So it depends on whether your DM wants to keep track of what type of shield is being used, and whether they even know of the different types of shields. For myself, I would differentiate the two types of shields: strapped shields take an action to equip like normal, because they have to be strapped on, but they can't be disarmed. Shields with handles can be equipped using your single free action on your turn since all you have to do is grab the handle, but that's balanced out by the fact that they can be disarmed (and you can drop it if you get stunned or something like that).

Second: charm person states that the target knows they've been charmed after the spell ends... so the Barbarian would have no way of knowing that they should rage to get rid of the charm, because they don't realize they're charmed. "This is my friend... I know he wiggled his fingers and said weird words at me, but he would never hurt me because he's my friend! No need to be suspicious." Though if they somehow learned that they were charmed, they could certainly rage to end the effect: there is nothing anywhere that states you have to be threatened to enter a rage. The hard part is just convincing the Barbarian that their good friend Mr. Evil Enchanter would ever actually charm them in the first place... so your best bet is to convince them that somebody else has cast some enchantment on them, and that they need to rage and kill it. Luckily, most Barbarians are probably easy to fool with something like that. Then, after raging, the charm ends and they know that they were charmed... and are conveniently already raging. Sorry, Mr. Evil Enchanter...

I would not allow someone to disarm a shield, due to the fact that a shield takes 1 action to don or doff - it is essentially 'strapped on' in a way that a weapon is not.

Rage says "On your turn..." - in order to do it when a spell is being cast on him it would effectively be as a reaction (even if we weren't in initiative order - only a reaction can interrupt a spell being cast).  I say it's both mechanically impossible and that I would not allow it.

EDIT:  Misready where you said 'successfully cast' - my answer is the same as the poster before me on the Rage question.
