More specifically: does Dispel Magic work against a spell that requires concentration? So if i am concentrated in one given spell, and someone casts dispel magic on me (succesfully), the spell vanishes? |
| #22ChlorobutanalSep 17, 2014 9:00:20 | I think dispel magic would consider the conjure spell to be a "spell on the (conjured) creature," so targeting a conjured creature with a successful dispel magic would end the spell prematurely.
However, dispel magic cast on a concentrating spellcaster would not end a conjure spell, as the conjure spell is not "on" the caster. It could dispel a shield spell or a mage armor spell, or a haste spell that the caster used on himself or herself, but it wouldn't dispel a concentration spell such as conjure elemental or web if dispel magic is cast on the spellcaster. If the dispel magic is cast on the webbed area or a conjured creature, then it could end the spell that created the magical effect or conjured the creature. |

The duration of the spell, and whether or not it required concentration, is irrelevant to Dispel Magic. Regardless the duration, Dispel Magic say, "you end now." It may be important to note that if the targeted spell effect does anything "when it ends," that effect will still happen. |
| (Reply to #3)Tydanosaurus | PHB Page 203: "Conjuration spells involve the transportation of objectes and creatures from one location to another. [...] Some conjurations create objects or effects out of nothing."
This rule could be clearer. If it "summons" a creature to the caster, arguable once the spell is cast there is no "effect" to be dispelled. This implies you have an actual creature that has been teleported to the caster. Dispel Magic would have not more effect here than if a Wizard dimension-doored. But these aren't instantaneous spells. They require concentration. That means there is "magic" that must be kept "active." It'd be nice if Dispel Magic specificied that any spell with duration "concentration" is dispelled on a successful check.
It seems pretty clear that Dispel Magic is meant to dispel summoned creatures, but there's plenty of wriggle room for a rules lawyer to be annoying here. |

| #6daedelSep 17, 2014 12:50:34 | More questions about this spell: the way it's worded, if an ally is dominated (as per the dominate person spell) and you want to dispel it, dispel magic will remove all spells currently on him/her, beneficial or not? Am i correct? Because there's no indications you can dispel an specific spell, just all of them affecting a target. |
| #7MechatarrasqueSep 17, 2014 12:56:24 | If the spell is conjure elemental, where losing concentration doesn't mean the elemental goes home, but instead attacks the caster, which implies that the conjuration spell is charming the elemental in addition to teleporting/creating it, then would dispell magic cause the elemental to port back home or be free to attack the conjurer? |

| #9daedelSep 17, 2014 13:37:01 | And following with the Conjure Elemental: what happens with Conjure Minor Elementals and Dispel Magic? If you use it, you dispel just one of them or the whole lot? |
| #102ChlorobutanalSep 17, 2014 16:57:35 | My opinion: dispel magic ends "the spell," so if you dispel conjure minor elementals, all of the elementals will disappear.
I think the conjure elemental elemental only turns on you if "your concentration is broken," but I don't have the book with me right now - if that's the case, I'd say that dispel magic doesn't make the elemental hostile but just sends it back to its home.
If, instead, the spell says that the creature becomes hostile "if the spell ends before one hour," or something similar, I would cause dispel magic to make the elemental hostile.
If you cast dispel magic on a target creature with both beneficial and harmful spells, dispel magic does not seem to discriminate and will end or attempt to end (ability check) every spell on the target creature. |
