Divine Smite while raging

Hey guys!  I am currently working on a Paladin/ Barbarian concept for my character. My question is in regards to not being able to cast spells while raging. Is Divine Smite considered a spell (like Thrunderous Smite, Searing etc)  or is it considered a feature, an innate ability granted to the Paladin by his god to use at will without the need to gather ingredients, concentration etc? I know you have to use a spell slot to be able to use it, but I see it as a way of balancing out the ability by limiting its use , otherwise Paladins would spam the heck out of it. What do you think?

Divine smite is not a spell, and therefore is not limited by the inability to cast spells while raging.

Yeah I'm not 100% on this since I don't have my book handy, but I believe that even though smite uses spell slots like a spell, it's not actually a spell.  It uses the same resource but that doesn't automatically make it a spell.

Its actually a great combo, though I prefer to dip barbarian and take more levels of paladin for the extra spell slots. Its a great combo for making a nature feeling barbarin. I run this combo with a worshiper of Talos.
