| #1blanklinkJul 11, 2014 8:01:28 | I think I may have created a monster. Unless I'm reading the rules wrong, I understand that a level 5 Paladin can use his divine smite and expend a 2nd level spell slot and gain 3d8 damage, then use a swift spell such as Thunderous Smite to pump up to 2d6 more in the same action. So, in one attack, he would deal 1d12 (For his two handed war axe) + 3d8 (Divine Smite) + 2d6 (Thunderous Smite). Am I missing something here? On average that would deal 24 damage, which seems incredibly high, since he has an extra attack to repeat the process. |

However, they have replaced all "swift spells" with "bonus action".
Presumably all smites will be bonus actions. You only get 1 bonus action per turn. |
| #3blanklinkJul 11, 2014 8:14:17 | That would make things more clear, I should think. Thanks for that. I'd still been working with the last playtest. I hope they put in paladins when they release the starter pack here in a couple of days. |

I'm a little dissapointed they're waiting a month between the release of each book. Its going to be frustrating not to put some sweet treasures, or bad ass monsters in my dungeons. |

Stacking the smite ability and smite spells and divine strikes and a concentration buff while also using multiple attacks did work in the playtest and pallies were very potent. Clerics had divine strikes cut back to once per turn so I believe the same would be true for pallies. Bonus actions will restrict some other actions and we'll see if breaking concentration cuts down buff effectiveness. |

In the front line while concentrating? That Aura of Protection at 6th level is going to get a real work out - should work out very useful indeed.
Nah, not seeing a problem here. |
| #92ChlorobutanalJul 13, 2014 19:43:30 | This seems ok to me. I know the rules for paladin are a bit outdated, but even in the context of Basic Rules:
A 5th level greatsword Fighter (with Great Weapon Fighting style) could Surge and do 4 attacks in a round for 8d6 + 12, assuming a 16 strength, re-rolling each 1 or 2 once. (45.3 average damage)
Assuming the smite and buff spell only work on one attack, a Paladin doing this to deal a lot of damage in an attack doesn't seem that imbalanced, considering it costs him a fair amount of resources. |
