Do Berserked PC's attack party members

I know this may seem like a silly question but I just want to clerify this. The cursed item "Berserker Axe" states that when a player goes berserk they attack "the creature nearest to you with the axe." Am I correct in the assumption that includes friends as well as foes?

Yes. 

I recommend you roll randomly (or let the player roll) including all possible legitimate targets, then the PC unloads on whoever's number came up.  (This allows some protective measures on the PCs' part.)

If you just assign a PC as the target it feels like a Disguised DM Jerk Move.
