So the question is if you roll a crit, will the divine smite damage dice be double from say 2d8 for a 1st level slot to 4d8 with the crit? |
| #2melloredNov 25, 2014 9:11:34 | yes |

And rolling that 20 generally means you know that's a good time to add the smite. Paladins are good at single target burst damage. |
| #4colbysoffDec 11, 2014 2:40:10 | so lets say that the palidin uses a 4th level spell slot to get 5d8 for smite, does the crit make it 10d8? |

| #6PsikerlordDec 11, 2014 4:09:02 | This is one area I've houseruled. Crits do max normal damage dice plus another roll of damage dice. Nothing else doubled (SA, smite, poison, etc). Works better imo, everyone who crits is happy, not just paladins and rogues. |

| #8guachiDec 11, 2014 18:59:29 | Wow. Yeah. That houseruling tells the assassin to just go away. Might as well just rip those pages out of the PHB. Heck, any rogue is wrecked with this as so much of his damage is tied up in a sneak attack.
If I'm a paladin or rogue player, I leave your game. Heck, even if I'm not I leave your game. It stomps all over two classes to massively boost classes like the mage who have multi-dice damage spells. |

| #16Trance-ZgDec 12, 2014 8:41:54 | But paladin has few spell slots. So I think it's intentional to call it after roll. |

| #18Trance-ZgDec 12, 2014 8:57:55 | It's nof fishing.
Paladins crit for 5% of the time, almost 10% with advantage. And if you would use divine smite on the crit there is 90% chance that you would do it anyway, in case of BB., or if not BBG, most likely it will be huge overkill. |
| #19guachiDec 12, 2014 12:07:38 | Not allowing a Rogue to roll his sneak attack on a crit reduces the damage of the Rogue by 5-10%. Are you giving them back that lost damage any other way? Like adding 10% damage to every other attack they do?
Doing crits and insane damage on round one is the entire schtick of the Assassin from the very moment you can even be an Assassin. If you don't like that, don't play an assassin. But a DM imposing his views on how classes should be played upon his players is just not good form. You might as well just do yourself a favor and disallow the entire archetype by saying "I don't allow assassins because I they do too much damage"
Personally, I think critical damage is just a bad idea but I wouldn't just arbitraily nerf classes by getting rid of it without adding something else back in to make up for it. |
