| #1zoroaster99Aug 25, 2014 5:08:53 | The invocation Agonizing Blast says "When you cast eldritch blast, add your Charisma modifier to the damage it deals on a hit."
When a Warlock reaches fifth level, Eldritch Blast fires two bolts each doing 1d10 instead of one bolt. Does a warlock with Agonizing Blast add his Charisma bonus to each bolt, or just to one? |
| #2KarlBAug 25, 2014 5:18:13 | The consensus is yes. Since each beam is a seperate attack roll and damage roll. |
| #3melloredAug 25, 2014 5:18:21 | RAW: Each bolt.
RAI: It's supposed to be 1 per creature. |
| #4DeltabeoulveAug 25, 2014 6:16:51 | Im not even sure RAI is supposed to be 1 per creature. The wording of the book is VERY simple in this (unlike the Empowered Evocation or whatever). When you cast eldritch blast, add your Charisma modifier to the damage it deals on a hit. On a hit...you have to hit with each ray, so it seems pretty clear that it was intended for this purpose. |

Eldritch at least requires the attack rolls, now I agree that this is powerful..but playing it..its really not that powerful. At level 17 the fighter is going to be doing the same thing with his melee attacks + action surge = double of Eldritch Blast. On top of that, by the time you are level 17 you have much more powerful spells to be using (Meteor Swarm) 40d6? Wish? Its not really game breaking in anyway...if someone wants to take two in warlock for a base 1d10 + Cha and lose out on their 18, and 20 abilites (and be using one of the only 2 invocations you can have)..seems to be a fair tradeoff in power. |

| #9DeltabeoulveAug 25, 2014 10:37:54 | A warlock cant cast them at the same time unless hasted. It has both, but can only use one unless hasted...and even then it only gets it use Meteor once (I dont remember if it gets it level 6-9) spells back on a short rest or not. Give it a sorc and it can cast Eldritch Blast twice at the cost of sorc points..but why? It has so many other spells to use. |
| #10zoroaster99Aug 25, 2014 10:54:59 | Thanks for the responses. This will make the player with a warlock in my game happy. I don't think it is overpowered since he has very few spell slots compared to the other casters (though at least he can recharge them on a short rest, which this party hardly ever seems to want to take). It just means he can do close to the damage of a fighter or barbarian of the same level at will (but less), as a fighter or barbarian can with their at will attacks. |
| #11KarlBAug 25, 2014 11:06:21 | I get the impression, given the strength of their pact weapon and cantrips, and their limited number of spells per day, that the Warlock is a hybrid meant to be harder hitting than a Wizard with non-expended spells like cantrips. Remember, they cast MUCH fewer spells per day than either a Wizard of Sorcerer. And it should be somewhat comparable in DPR to a Fighter given the trade offs: Warlock *can* be hard to take down, but only by taking a specific combo of spells, feats, invocations and Otherworldly Patron. Otherwise, they are more fragile.
So in the end, the Warlock is nice due to the versatility of it's playstyle: frontline combat tank or long range sniper. |

| (Reply to #15)zoroaster99 | Dastion, can you please clear up for me, are you saying Mike Mearls was asked specifically how Eldritch Blast/Agonizing Blast worked, and he clarified it? If so, how does it work?
If I have three bolts and shoot each at a different target, do I add my Cha bonus to each?
If I shoot all three bolts at one target, do I add my Cha bonus once, or three times? |
