Is the driud limited in any way to what size aimal he can change into?  Can they change into insects.

As long as the Challange Rating (CR) is the same as, or lower than your level according to the Beast Table (Page 66 in the Player's Handbook) you can change into that beast. I am not sure about insects, but at Druid Level 2 you can change into a spider as they are classed as beasts, and are a CR of 0.  Other limits are that a druid can't swim as a beast until level 4, and they can't fly as a beast that until level 8.

I would recommend looking through the Monster Manual and checking out the Creatures Appendix (Page 317) to get ideas of what kinds of beasts you can transform into.

Be aware that if you to drop negative hit points in your current form you can be killed outright (=no death saves). A typical insect will have 1 hit point so if something steps on, bites or swats you for 2 points of damage. . .

The only limitations are:

1) You have seen the creature before

2) It is a beast type (which includes insects)

3) The CR and movement is permitted by your druid level

On the matter of instant death, check with your DM. The above posts describe the RAW correctly, but it seems overly punitive for a utility function of Wild Shape. I'm not a fan of extensive house ruling, and druids don't really need more goodies. However, it would be a rather inglorious end to a high-level druid to be eaten by a cat, and not really fun for anyone except a cruel DM... unless the risk is part of the fun, I guess?

I did end my post with, "unless the risk is part of the fun"

It's the order of operations described under Instant Death on p.197: "When damage reduces you to 0 hit points and there is damage remaining, you die if the remaining damage equals or exceeds your hit point maximum."

Some people think it works like this: you take damage and are reduced to 0 HP -> check if remaining damage matches or exceeds your max HP -> if it does, you are dead -> you come out of wild shape dead

Other people think it works like this: you take damage and are reduced to 0 HP -> you come out of wild shape with your humanoid HP -> you apply remaining damage to your humanoid form

The argument, I believe, mostly stems from whether there is any room in the quoted phrase for something to happen between the damage and the instant death part, ie. dropping out of wild shape. To me, the RAW reads as the first case, but it's not an interpretation I especially like.

Saw the disintegrate/druid/barbarian/half-orc thread exploding awhile back and instinctively avoided it. I just did some skimming to catch up, didn't realize this debate was already well underway.

Would it be considered overpowered to change into something that tiny like an ant, or anything even smaller which you can possibly imagine? That is effectively an invisibility when the enemies can hardly see you.

It's effectively invisibility, but ant form would not be without other drawbacks. They're fast for their size, but still slow compared to a mouse or a human. Maybe a walking speed of 1-2 feet? Hard to say, never really seen them move in a straight line as a druid might be inclined to do. Their senses are pretty limited, too. I would be hard pressed to give them anything more than blindsense to 1 foot.

Plus good luck evading any AoE, even something as simple as someone accidently casting Create Bonfire on you.
