I have a question about the Dueling fighting style available to Fighters, Paladins, and Rangers. The wording of the feat states "When you are wielding a melee weapon in one hand and no other weapons". My question is; does the bonus apply when a fighter is wielding a weapon in one hand and a shield in the other? It seems like by the letter of the rule it does (as shields are not classified as weapons in this edition), however it seems to go against the spirit or intended purpose of the feat. Is this the case or does it work well with the spirit of the feat as well (as in was it origionally intended to work alongside shields)?

Yes, dueling fighting style works with a shield because it is considered armor, not a weapon.

Worth noting that should you have access to multiple fighting styles, protection and duelist can be used simultaneously. (As in, the shield required by protection and the one-handed weapon required to be your lone weapon by duelist don't block each other.) Meaning simulating a sword and board specialist character is possible when stacking fighting styles.

@Dungeonleft Was the "Dueling" fighting style intended to support a shield? "Dueling" doesn't scream "shield" at me.
‏@JeremyECrawford A character with the Dueling option usually pairs a one-handed weapon with a shield, spellcasting focus, or free hand.
