Easier to Level...

now in 5th Edition than 4th? Like WAY easier. (And forgive me if this has been discussed elsewhere on the forums, but I simply haven't seen it)

Maybe my basic math skills border on brain dead. But it feels like I'm right.

With only 20 levels compared to the previous 30. One could argue that reaching 3rd level in 4th edition is the same accomplishment as reaching 2nd in 5th. (3/3=1x2=2 or 30th level / 3 = 10 x 2 =20th level right?)

To reach 3rd level in 4th Edition required 2,250 XP or 11,250 total for a standard party of five.

To reach 2nd level in 5th Edition requires 300 XP or 1,500 total for a standard party of five.

Lets assume both parties only fight basic rank and file goblins.

Goblin Warrior in 4th Edition = 100 XP

Goblin in 5th Edition = 50 XP

Therefore 4th Edition parties would have to kill 113 goblins to reach 3rd level. Where as 5th Edition parties will only need to kill 30 Goblins. Granted I concede there are ALOT of differences with Hit Points and damage capabilities between the two editions. But needing only one quarter of the combat kills compared to the previous edition seems rather easy.

Plus if one were so inclined to adapt 2nd editions modules or 4th edition to 5th, it seems that a large number of encounters would have to be cut to make the party reach the same end level with 5th edition as was intend by the original module/adventure.

Maybe i'm way off.....

The frist 3 levels are intended to go by quickly.  With only a session or 2 for each level.  This is so people can get their interesting powers and abilities quicker.

They also tried to get it so you could go 1-20 in a school season.  Which is an overall speed up.

That said, your free to adjust things to your pace.

There is also Milestone Experience to consider: your party gains a level after they finish doing something significant.  Hoard of the Dragon Queen is built this way, for instance.  Based on the story, not on the game math.

I've gained a level in the middle of an AL module (DDEX1-1, designed as 5 mini-adventures).

I've gained a level after playing exactly one adventure at current level.

I'm currently looking at having a trivial amount of XP plus playing one adventure but not quite reaching enough XP to gain my next level.  After that, it looks like I'll be playing multiple AL adventures per level.

I still look at 9th level as Name Level.
