PH HANDBOOK 5e PG85: Starting at 2nd level, when you hit a creature with a mele weapon attack, you can expend one paladin spell slot to deal radiant damage to the target, in addition to the weapon's damage. The extra damage is 2d8 for a first level spell slot, to a maximum of 5d8. The damage increases by 1d8 if the target is an undead or fiend.
So our question is, a paladin that is level 2 has 2 level 1 spell slots. Could the paladin expend both slots into one attack and do 4d8 instead of 2d8 or say at level 5 I expend 2nd level slot and 1 1st level slot up to the maximum 5d8? If not how many times can I expend in one combat round? Do I expend 1 slot every attack or one slot every turn. We are just confused on the wording. Say the paladin attacked once expended 2nd level and 1st and did 5d8 and repeated that same combo on the next attack to do another 5d8 since they are seperate attacks and it doesnt say 5d8 per round. |

It doesn't get any better than that really. If Paladins were able to do this there would be champion palys everywhere smiting everything. |

Thus at level 5, you could do it twice in a turn with multi-attack. Or 3 times if you also TWF. Or 4 times if you had haste cast on you. At the cost of 4 spell slots. |

And that is for each hit (as stated here: when you hit a creature with a mele weapon attack,). Note: that you expend the slot only after you hit (not just attack), thus, you may choose to expend a spell slot when you roll a critical hit; thereby re-rolling the smite damage as per the rules of a critical hit. |
