Extra attack, why can't it stack?

Why do you suppose the designers don't allow the "extra attack" feature from non-fighter classes to stack? I"m sure there's a good reason, I just don't know what it is!

Balance presumably.

How many attacks does a 10th level paladin have?  2

How many attacks does a 10th level ranger have? 2

So, how many attacks does a paladin 5/ranger 5 have?  2  , but if it was 3 you can see the issue here.

Same with Bladelocks. They wanted there to be lots of options to make the Fighter special so people would actually enjoy playing them.So Fighter is the only class that can get 4 melee attacks.

Paladins and Rangers and Barbarians have other sources of increasing their damage beyond more attacks. (Smites, Rage, Hunter's Mark etc)

Plus it would be wierd for a Paladin 5/Barbarian 5 character to have three attacks when a level 10 paladin or level 10 barbarian doesn't.

Barbarians can easily gain 3 attacks/round by using Frenzy. Using this more than once/day however comes with associated risks (exhaustion).

The actual reason for why you have to be a fighter to get more than 2 attacks total from Extra Attack is because that's a fighter class' special feature.
