Faerie Fire and Fog Cloud

Fog Cloud is heavy obscurement which causes an effect similar to being blind.

Faerie Fire can "light up" creatures so you have advantage on attacks against them; however, faerie fire says you have to be able to see the creature affected by faerie fire in order to gain this advantage.  So, casting fog cloud on top of enemies which were affected by faerie fire would seem to counteract the affect of faerie fire as long as they are in the fog cloud.  Is this accurage?

As well, if a mage were to cast darkness over those same enemies, this would also counteract faerie fire.

So, what exactly is the point of faerie fire?

It grants advantage if you aren't in a situation with heavy obscurement (which is pretty common in my experience) and it counters plain invisibility.

In my group, at least, we're OK with Faerie Fire working inside of fog, specifically in Fog Cloud. If a caster is willing to spend two turns casting these spells, or the players can coordinate well enough to launch this combo, I think their effort should be rewarded. We play that it doesn't grant advantage, it just lets you see targets within the fog cloud. Darkness, however, overrides Faerie Fire.

I would rule that anyone in a fog within 5' would be able to see the glow of fairy fire, and attack with advantage and disavantage canceling.  Beyond 5' it's suppressed.

Darkness is a higher level spell, and will suppresss faerie fire.

And remember, people in the fog/darkness can't see either.  It can be as much of a hinderance as a help.  Where as faery fire is straight benifit.

Plus given concentraion, you'll rarely see these spells at the same time.

Based on the wording of Faierie Fire, it wouldn't allow you to have advantage or negate the disadvantage of someone being invisible.

Darkness doesn't just suppress Faerie Fire, it dispels the effect.

Fog Cloud creates a heavily obscured area, which effectively makes you blind (PHB errata) when trying to see something in it. Fog Cloud does not make creatures invisible. It's also worth noting that FF creates dim light to 10 feet. Affected targets aren't even as bright as a candle (5 feet bright, additional 5 feet dim). I think the Fog Cloud is sufficiently dense to suppress the benefit of Faerie Fire even at melee range, but that doesn't matter since blinded targets cancel each others advantage/disadvantage, and adv/dis don't stack. Even ranged attacks are made normally (you get advantage because they're blinded, but disadvantage because you can't see them).

So what is the point of Faerie Fire? The enemy still needs to spend resources to negate it, assuming they even have the means to do so. Sure, it's an easy spell to counteract if you have the right tools. Also, soup is easy to eat... unless all you have are forks.
