The text for the Goodberry spells says up to 10 berries appear. Does this mean that the caster decides how many to make or is there supposed to be a dice roll like a 1d10 or 2d4+2?

Thanks for any help.

It says that ten berries appear... so 10 berries appear.

What is confusing about that?

The spell description doesn't say "10 berries," or you'd have a point. It says:

Up to ten berries appear in your hand and are infused with magic for the duration.

Caster's choice.

We played it as casters choice. He basicly hands them out to the party and says to only use them for the fallen.  There was a comment on it being enough nourishment to sustain a creature for one day but the berries have not been used that often as of yet. I can see them making more then the party size worth due to fallen NPC's or wanting to question a NPC they knock out.

I don't see much reason to NOT make 10.

Unless your evil, and just want to watch people starve.

I believe that text is a lingering aspect of play test. Back then, you had to find (forage for) your own berries. They didn't magically appear like they do now. So, this text made more sense in that setup, because you could find (say) 20 berries, but could only use one casting of the spell to enchant up to 10 of them. It prevented you from enchanting too many at once.

goodberry is actually a pretty cool spell. If you have slots remaining at the end of the day, before you sleep, cast it and create a bunch of healing berries that will last into your next day (24 hours). I like to think of them as ranger pet food, mostly, keep that beastie alive!

Good points, all.

We don't do force-feeding of goodberries or potions to the unconscious, so that doesn't enter into our equation. But our Druid - who while lurking found this thread, damn his eyes - has now figured out that, at long rest time, he can spend any remaining spell slots on goodberry for the next day. Now all I have to do is teach him that unspent spell slots are wasted spell slots, and uncast spells generally mean pain. ;)

I've played a few rangers and always take goodberry for the reasons people have listed. I agree it's a good spell.

I realize it is a houserule and you can do whatever you want, but it seems like there's a consensus that you can only eat one berry a day, because it provides enough nourishment for a day.  That's silly.  An MRE (Meal Ready to Eat) provides enough nourishment for one day (technically), but that doesn't stop me from eating more than one a day, nor does it stop the army from providing me hot meals two times a day during a field problem PLUS an MRE.

If you do it as a perceived balance issue (I don't see it, healing is easy to come by, so goodberry is far from over-powered) then great, but the nourishment argument doesn't really hold up for me.

Much like when a spell says you can push someone UP to 10 feet, you can push them anwhere between 0 and 10 feet. So you can make 0 to 10 berries.

You can choose to make less, should you want, but there is 0 listing of any randomization other than what the caster wishes. Easy enough, right?
