| #1LXXVISep 06, 2014 11:34:25 | Guys, have a serious question guys. I was DM'ing my second game ever last night in 5e. My PC's were battling a Mimic. When they were attacked by it, they were grappled. There was no apparent reason for them to have to break the grapple. They could still attack, they could still move, other PC's could attack the Mimic without hitting their buddy. What is the point of being grappled if they don't have to first break the Grapple to act? I admit, I got a little upset. Does it not make sense that if you were in a Grappled condition you would first need to beat the DC at the beginning of your turn BEFORE doing anything else? Also, is there a possibility that when a ranged attack hit this thing, another player could be hit as well? |

I understand it's not incapacitated, but IMHO, no actions should be allowed until the grapple is broken. I picture an older brother sitting on top of his younger brother playing the "Why you hittin' yourself" game.

I am probably free-thinkng too much on this one. I think I need to figure out better monsters for this group. They are lead by someone waaaay more versed in this game than me. We call him "The Machine" for the way he builds characters so well. Everything in this Level 3 PC game is almost 0 challenge for them. I had a lot of luck with throwing x5 challenge level 4's at them in the past.....looks like I will be attacking them with a Hoard of self-healng Ogres at them next time around, lol.

| #8TimmeeSep 07, 2014 13:56:23 | You could use a second action to make the same check and Restrain the target if you like. Don't think it's in the rules per se, but 5e is a very flexible system, have fun. In some of the moster descriptions of actions, it says that a creature grappled is also restrained until it breaks the grapple. Prolly that way in the mimic's too. |

| #10ShermanSep 07, 2014 23:53:07 | I agree that something along those lines should be a core rule. Grappling is boring at best. That said, it does make a huge difference in some situations. Try having your zombies grapple to pin a target in place while their allies pummel the party wizard. It's not a true grapple, but it's not worthless either. |
| #11UngeheuerLichSep 08, 2014 6:10:34 | Easy:
You can move the grappled creature with you. At half speed.
So any strength based character can just grab annoyinlgly hard to hit creatures and grab them, and pull them either amid your friends. Dragging them out of the defensive position, to make room for your friend. You can also move around without fearing an opportunity attack from that creature, as you never leave its range. You can grab a friend and move him to security,
Just because it is no instant win button does not mean it is not useful, |
