| #1MoribundAug 31, 2014 11:03:10 | The Grappler feat's third benefit is as follows:
"Creatures that are one size larger than you don't automatically succeed on checks to escape your grapple."
I can't find any other reference to automatic escape based on size. It seems odd that that rule would be in another core book. Is this some hold over from an earlier version of the rules, or am I missing something?
If it is an error, does Grappler need something else to replace it? |
| #2OverpromisesAug 31, 2014 11:30:24 | “The target of your grapple must be no more than one size larger than you, and it must be within your reach.” (Basic rules p. 74 and PHB p. 195).
As written, the third part of Grappler appears to do nothing, yes.
I doubt the intent was for humans to be able to grapple huge creatures. Since not all feats have three bullet points, it might not be replaced by something else. |
| #3melloredAug 31, 2014 11:29:09 | Yes it seems to be an error.
Personaly, i would change it to be "you can grapple creatures 1 size larger then normal". |

| #20-ktkenshinx-Sep 01, 2014 13:51:03 | I have no idea why this Prone/Grappled condition thing is even an argument. It's one of the rare instances on this forum where RAW (the conditions have nothing in them that prevents stacking), RAI (the rules encourage players to do a variety of different standup/groundfighting maneuvers at once), and flavor/common sense (you can easily stand while an opponent is grappled and prone, or at least effectively prone) all match.
The big advantage to "pinning" someone per the Grappler feat is the disadvantage on Dexterity saving throws. I brainstormed a Monk that grapples an opponent, restrains them, and then uses the Water Whip feature to blast them with for 4d10 AND knock them prone in the same square. You can also just use it in tandem with your party spellcasters (beware that you will also have disadvantage on those saves).
Actually, my biggest question about Grappler is about the action used to pin. As it's written, it looks like you need to use your entire action ("You can use your action to..."). It's not 100% clear if this pinning action takes the place of an attack roll (like Grapple normally does), or if it's a special action that must be done alone.

If you're looking for real-world MMA physics concerning knocking someone prone and restraining them while grappling, there are a number of styles that teach wristlocks which allow me to use leverage to dump you on your arse and then maintain the wristlock with one hand (which you are not just going to stand up during without breaking your arm) while beating the hell out of you with the other hand.

Saves which, using probability, cancles out your disadvantage to Dex. Saves and other creature's advantage to hit you. Not only that, but the creature you are restraining now has a chance to take your damage for you. For example, a Monk with 16 AC would have 21 AC. Any attack roll of 16 to 20 would instead hit the person you are restraining.
You also have a chance to avoid AoE attacks using Dex. Saves, but the person you are restraining is unlikely to (he still has disadvantage). This goes great with a Monk's evasion. |
