Handling pushy spells

So, I'm playing a Tempest Cleric, and as a result, nearly every spell I cast ends up pushing opponets (and the occasional unhappy ally) around the map.  How do you guys handle conflicts in movability.  Say, for instance, I cast thunderwave against opponents that are already backed up to a wall.  I'm assuming you just don't move them at all.  What about if the can't move straight back, but there's a space diagonally?  Do you move them into that square instead?  I realize there's a lot of fiat involved, just wndering since these things don't seem to be spelled out, how other handle them.

I would let you push them back diagonally.
