Headband of Intellect

Say a level 5 wizard with Int 16 has a headband of intellect. So in the morning he prepares 9 (= level + int mod) spells. For whatever reason, in the afternoon he takes off the headband. Does he immediately 'forget' one spell? On the one hand, he only has the capacity for 8 spells now. On the other hand, maybe your int score only matters while you are doing the actual preparing.

I think I would say he forgets a spell, his choice.

I'm actually noticing a distinct lack of abttribute boosting spells. Considering what I've seen It seems like there won't even be a headband of intellect to boost your Int, so the question itself might be moot.

i would agree with you OP, he would suddenly not have the mental capacity to hold as many spells in his head as he did with the headband on.

how you go about determinging which dissapears though is interesting.

on that note iw ould say if he puts the headband back on, he would not suddenly get back the spells he lost from losing it, until he had a chance to rest and study again.

i would also stipulate if a player threw a (hissy) fit about it, i would let him keep his extra spell cause i dont htink it would matter to much to the game as a whole, haha.

If the headband was forcibly removed, it might be more fun to determine the lost spell at random; if the wizard intentionally removes it, I'd probably be ok with him selecting the spell to forget.

However, I wouldn't let him forget a spell he had already cast that day if he had spells left that he had not cast.

I would also allow him to remember the one he forgot when he put the headband back on.

I don't think anything in the rules covers it. The DMG may. In the meantime, for Rulings purposes, there're two factors that enter here: Simplicity, and Preventing Abuse.

Simplicity favors the notion that you just let the player keep all their prepared spells until the end of the day.

Preventing Abuse favors the notion that certain item limitations are there for a reason, and you shouldn't be able to get around them.

I'd say this:

If you just take off the hat, and you're not out to get any sort of incidental benefit that you couldn't get if you continued to wear it, then, fair play, just keep 'em all. Too much un-fun effort to figure out how you lose them, whether you regain them, etc.

If you, however, put on a different magic hat, or dis-attune yourself from the Headband to free up an attunement slot, or otherwise try to gain a magic-item-related benefit you couldn't get while wearing it -- OR -- if you give the hat to someone in an effort for two of you to 'share' its powers -- that might qualify as abuse. In this case, I'd say you lose any benefit you got from the hat, and those prepared spells you lost do not come back until/unless you re-prepare spells, with the hat on again, after a long rest.

I'd make it the same as the guantlets.

If your carry alot, and take off the gauntlets, you drop stuff.
