| #1OrethPrimerAug 22, 2015 5:30:00 | Can a spell caster cast healing word by looking down at itself? If not then can they use a mirror? Should a character have to look in another characters eyes or face to heal them? Or at their wound itself?

| #2OrethPrimerAug 22, 2015 5:40:30 | I'm just curious on thoughts here if the caster of the spell can cast it on itself? Also if a character is in the midst of battle and is in sight, but not fully, as in the creature they are fighting partially is obstructing the view. I'm thinking a caster may cast this spell upon itself by looking at their wound or just down at their self. I'm also thinking they do not have to look exactly at the receiver of the healings wound but just have a general sight of the wounded. I would love some feedback and ideas though. Thanks. |

On the other hand if you're blind you can't use healing word on anyone. |

Maybe a healing word should heal whomever it's vibration touches at a range where right next to the point of origin you are healed more, but as the vibration spreads there's a lesser effect. |
| #7OrethPrimerAug 22, 2015 6:57:09 | Eyelids are pushing it there jaelis. Ha ha.....not a bad idea though. |
| #8DeathMutantLivesAug 22, 2015 8:44:31 | In my game, you can always target yourself -- if the spell allows it -- even if blind or deaf. |
| #9OrethPrimerAug 22, 2015 9:31:41 | I hear you deathmutant, I have a similar outlook on spellcasting, why have the spell if you can not cast it upon yourself.....even a curse type of spell. If my player really wants that? It seems in this rule set that they are very vague so we can figure it out for ourselves. I like that concept in this edition! |
| #10YunruAug 22, 2015 9:43:32 | I can see my eyelashes, especially if I kinda squint. |

You can't help seeing your own nose anytime you have your eyes open. Especially if you close one eye.
On a more serious note, if the spell say it targets "a target/creature", "one or more targets/creatures", etc., it's perfectly legal to choose yourself as one of those creatures - as long as it doesn't specifically say "other than yourself". (There would, however, be an issue if the particular spell mentions targets within the area of effect and that area of effect doesn't include the origin square of the spell...but that's kind of a corner case.)

| #13El_CondoroAug 23, 2015 6:22:30 | Targeting Yourself (PHB p. 204) "If a spell targets a creature of your choice, you can choose yourself..."
Healing Word: "A creature of your choice that you can see..."
Ergo, no problem targeting yourself with HW. |

| #15OrethPrimerAug 23, 2015 8:01:32 | Just to clarify, if there was a broken toe involved and only the toe was visible then i would let the healing work. Healing someone through a toe only, sounds kind of iffy. |
| #16El_CondoroAug 23, 2015 13:38:46 | Being able to see any part of the target is enough, IMO. My rationale is that the cleric is not being the conduit through which the divine energy (or whatever he chooses to call it) passes to the target but is rather the means by which it is directed to the target. The energy itself affects the target from its source. Kind of like a WW2 forward artillery observer to use a RW example. |
