#1 greendiamond16 Sep 13, 2014 5:25:46	I have been searching for the basic rules all night now. me and my friends have just started to try to get into this game, but everywhere i look the rules are spread out terribly. they are never direct always going to the fall back of make them up yourself. We are 100% new to this concept all we ask for is a realitivly simple to understand instruction on how to get started in a modern game. what we get is nothing but review videos and terrifyingly long pdf files that do not do much to actually guide you to where you need to go. or at least they are so bad at guiding that its impossible to actually get somewhere.
#2 gregsc Sep 13, 2014 5:38:43	I recommend the Starter Set. It has pre-made characters, an adventure to run them through, and a short version of the rules.   It's good to see someone starting out in the hobby. I hope you come to enjoy it as much as I do. Good luck.
#3 DM_HEEGZ Sep 13, 2014 10:41:02	The Starter Set is your best bet, as mentioned. It is designed for a group like yours, and I think also fun for experienced groups as it is well written. For the basic rules, I recommend using both the player and DM version (for your DM). If the length of them is a problem, just skip to the adventuring parts and read those so that you know how to play, you can always reference the character building and spell parts later as needed. Here are the files:   http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules   The quick and dirty rules to play the game are on p. 57-77 in the basic pdf. At the very least the DM will need to read these 20 pages, otherwise you will have no idea how to play. Also, the vast majority of the DM basic pdf is monster stats for making adventures. There are only a few extra pages at the beginning and end of that pdf for the DM. So make sure your DM reads the basics of how to play and run adventures. If no one is willing to do that, then you will need to find another game to play where reading instructions is not required.   If you don't want to buy anything, you will have to make up the adventures yourself, using the two basic pdf documents found in that link above. However, for $11.99 you  can get the Starter Set on Amazon. It is designed to hand hold you through the process of learning how to play D&D from scratch, for both players and new DMs. There is also the first major adventure called Hoard of the Dragon Queen which is under $19 on Amazon.  Good luck!
#4 Moot_Dundle Sep 13, 2014 17:46:53	Welcome to the D&D. Great times are ahead of you. If possible, try to find someone in your area who is familiar with D&D. When I was younger (in middle school) we had a few older players (high school and collage) who showed us what the game was all about and DM'ed for us. If it wasn't for the help they offered I don't know if most of us would still be gaming today. When you get older try to do the same for younger players. Moot Dundle
