hi

sorry for the dumb question but I haven't been able to find any answers for this

The PCs have now reached level 2 and we are going through levelling up but I can't seem to find out what spells a cleric gets at this level.

The domain spells are ok just not what standard spells they get.

Could someone point me in the right direction

thanks

The cleric get's to prepare wisdom modifier + cleric level spells (each long rest, you can choose any from the cleric spell list).  In addition to their domain spells.

So, at level 1, with +3 wis, you would have 2 domain spells, and 4 other cleric spells.

At level 2, you would have 2 domain spells, and 5 other cleric spells (and channel divinity).

You can cast any of those spells with any of your spell slots.  Which increases to 3 level 1 spell slots.

thanks

so at level 2 do they get any new cleric spells or is it just the domain spells?

sorry to resurrect this thread, I am right in thinking that at level 3, the cleric gets 2nd level domain spells only?

It may help to think of it as the following:

- It is a multiple layer system

[1] first layer is 'Spell Known'

For a Cleric you 'know' ALL spells on the Cleric spell list in the back of the PHB.

Cantrips are an exception, as the class says, you start of 'knowing' 3 cantrips, and then you gain additional as per Cleric class table in PHB

Domain spells are added to the list of spells 'known' by your cleric, even if they're not present in the Cleric spell list at the back of the PHB (eg Fireball for Light domain clerics). You get to 'know' these additional spells as per the table in the respective Domain section. E.g. Tempest Clerics 'know' Thunderwave at level 1.

[2] second layer is 'Spells Prepared'

Now comes the second layer, which changes every time you take a long rest. These are the spells your Cleric 'prepares' I.e. From the big list of ALL the spells known, you choose to 'prepare' a certain number of spells daily. This number = 'WIS modifier + Cleric level' e.g a Level 3 Cleric with 16 WIS (+3 bonus), can prepare a total of 6 spells daily (Cantrips don't count for this calculation), from the list of 'known spells' (which as explained above, for clerics, is the entire spell list + domain spells).

Additional limitation, you can only prepare spells for which you have a spell slot I.e. A Level 3 cleric cannot prepare spells higher than level 2 since he doesn't have slots for them.

Finally, Domain spells are ALWAYS assumed to be prepared by your Cleric (this is their speciality), and they don't count towards the daily limit (6 in the above example)

[3] final layer is 'Spell Slots'

These slots are defined as per the Cleric table in the PHB. These are the number and level of spells your Cleric can cast daily, from the list of Spells you prepared each day (as explained above).

E.g. At Level 3 you get three Level 1 slots and one Level 2 slot (I think, I don't have PHB in hand) to cast. For your limit of 6 spells prepared at level 3 in above example, you could prepare one level 1 spell and five level 2 spells, or any combination totalling six. (Since you can only cast level 1 or 2 spells at level 3 cleric).

So a 3rd level cleric has 10 spells prepared.

4 spells are his domain spells. 2 x 1st level spells and 2 x 2nd level spells. These are chosen for him when he chooses his domain and cannot be changed.

He also get's to choose 6 other spells (Wisdom + level = 3 + 3 = 6)

These spells can be any mixture of 1st or 2nd level spells as a 3rd level cleric has 1st and 2nd level spell slots according to the cleric table.

If it helps I record my spells prepared like this (assuming the cleric was Life Domain)

1st Level Spells

D - Bless

1 - Command

D - Cure Wounds

2 - Guiding Bolt

3 - Protection from Evil and Good

4 - Shield of Faith

2nd Level Spells

5 - Aid

D - Lesser restoration

6 - Prayer of Healing

D - Spiritual Weapon

Spell Slots: 4 x 1st level spells, 2 x 2nd level spells

where numbered spells are the ones I have chosen to freely prepare and the spells marked with a D are my domain spells and are always the same for this character.
