Hi, got a question about something unclear.

It says I get a 1d6 extra damage for every attack I do after I cast it - does that attack include magical attacks?

Thanks!

Yes. Very much so. Which is why Hex followed by eldritch blast can be such a lethal combination. Especially since, when you cast hex with a higher level spell slot, you can essentially apply it to as many creatures as you want in a day provided you keep killing them.

On a related note:

are attack rolls  ability checks?

Are skills checks as well?

What about saving throws?

Hex is a major part of being a warlock.   Its a great spell, and highly recommended.   That said...   while it does work with eldritch blast and other cantrips that make an attack roll, it does not work with spells like fireball, as you are not making an attack roll, but calling for a save.

Take Hex and Hellish Rebuke, and then Witch Bolt.    Hellish Rebuke is a single  target spell, but its not an attack.    Witch Bolt would deal extra damage when you make the initial attack roll, but subsequent turns do not enjoy the Hex benefit.

EDIT - well, witch bolt is concentration, as is hex, so they wouldn't stack in the first place, but if they could, that's what would happen.

I was actually thinking of mixing Hex and Acid spray as Hex gives disadvatage to a save of my choice. But I guess Acid Spray won't be considered an attack for the extra damage?

Oh that is good to know!

You could grab it with Magic Initiate as a Wizard and use it to make spells such as Scorching Ray do more damage.

I have a few questions on this now too

Does Hex trigger off each beam for things like Eldritch Blast or Scorching Ray, or do you only get the 1d6 once?

If your target dies and you use your bonus action to curse a new creature, does the duration reset or is it 1 hour(at first level anyway) from the first time you cast it?

Does being able to use the bonus action on a subsequent turn last through to a new combat? Like if you fought something and killed it, then 30 minutes later got into another combat would you still be able to use the bonus action to curse a new creature without using another spell slot?

Should be said - eahc attack that on the same cursed creature. Can't Eldritch blast be spread around?

Yeah, I threw Hex on a bad guy and said he was at disadvantage with Dex.  The party Cleric *loved* it for Sacred Flame.  If you can't use it to influence saving throws, then it makes the power near worthless since ability checks happen so few and far between for bad guys.

This Hex discussion got me thinking about an odd build, monk/warlock. Hex on top of flurry of blows. Potentially Devil's Sight for Way of Shadows monk and Darkness? Though the Hex ability check disadvantage would also be great with Open Hand and Four Elements abilities.

Would a dip of 2 warlock levels be enough or might you use more, 4 for ability score, 5 for extra invocation and spells at 3?

Well, you could also just snag the spell via Magic Initiate feat too.

You could, but then it'd only be once per long rest and you wouldn't get any of the fringe benefits.
