I need help to find a rule. I am not interested in your home game rule, if the rule do not exist in the rule books we already know how we want to rule, it, my table is just curious if there is an official ruling on how to do it. Please is you can refer to the page and sub title where the rule is indicated it would be greatly appreciated.

So a rogue is walking in a corridor, he's being stealthy (so go half movement) and he's searching for trap, secret door, ambush etc... (cutting his movmeent by half again) so the rogue is advancing at 25% speed. Since the stelalth and perception check are made continiously, the rogue use both passive stealth and passive perception instead of ruling every 5 feet.

Can a rogue (without any special feats, or abilities) move at full movement, but still stealthy, maybe with a disavantage on his stealth roll (-5 on passive stealth)

In combat the rogue cast darkness (or invisibility) and walk to reach his adversary, what is the DC the monster need to reach to notice the rogue (the rogue did not take a bonus action to hide, but did not attack neither (since he cast darkness for his action)?

- no DC since everyone know where other people are unless they take an action (or cumming action) to hide?

- stealth check with disavantage?

thank you

You do realize this is a game of rulings, not rules, right?

So, they include a minute by minute pace on a table that only tracks pace at great distances? Yeah... seems legit.

Yes, the table is below the sub-section entitled Mounts and Vehicles, but by no way does that make it only pertain to that sub-section of the Travel Pace section. It's simply at the end of the Travel Pace section so you can reference it for the whole section, not just one of its sub-sections.

The first paragraph of the section details general travel pace (while referencing the table), while it's two sub-sections detail specific travel pace scenarios.

The real question is: If a Rogue walks down a corridor with no creature to hear them, do they make a sound?

It's astonishing to me that people could think that someone can move at 30 feet per round while stealthed, and that someone having moved 270 feet in 9 rounds will somehow be transported backwards 70 feet if they hit that 10th round (1 minute of travel time).

Movement while traveling: The following rules determine how far a character or monster can move in a minute, an hour, or a day. (Includes consideration of stealth.)

Movement in combat: On your turn, you can move a distance up to your speed. You can use as much or as little of your speed as you like on your turn, following the rules here. (Includes no consideration of stealth.)

As an aside, I think it's perfectly reasonable to allow a character to use stealth while having to climb, crawl, swim, or jump to get where they need to go.

As a matter of errata: In chapter 8, under special types of movement, the "climbing, swimming, and crawling" section only describes climbing and swimming. There is no description of crawling.

(I'm aware that crawling is described in chapter 9.)

Speed is defined on p. 17 and makes a distinction between 'traveling (chapter 8) and fighting (chapter 9).' There are no rules for slowing a character to less than their normal movement to use the Stealth skill. The general guidelines in chapter 8 are for ease of calculating how far a party of composite races and speeds will travel in a given amount of time.

Dash is the action for characters to move at their fastest speed. Bonus actions like Cunning Action allow certain classes to move faster.

Not using these actions already slows a character down (effectively by around half). So, attacking, or moving normally (looking around for threats etc.), or searching all reduce the character from its potential dash speed to its normal speed.

Using Stealth is no different - the character has slowed (as compared to dash) to allow for it.

As for the swimming example, a decent swimmer can swim at normal speed very quietly (even silently) but if they try to dash, they would make more noise. But there is no rule for this - it would come down to DM fiat.

[Edit]: The description of Stealth for travelling on p. 182 seems to indicate it is intended for a party rather than individual characters. The use 'the characters' (pl.) and 'they can try' rather than 'a character can try' seems to hint at that. Actually, it's explicit on p. 181 - 'While traveling, a group of adventurers...'

There's travel pace and there's movement speed in combat. These two are completely unrelated to each other. This is not a case of "specific beats general rule".

Outside combat, everybody travels at the same speed, regardless of race, unless they choose different paces.

Also note that travel pace actually depends on the distance traveled too, it does not actually scale up. If you travel in units of hours, your travel speed is different than if you travel in units of minutes. If you travel in units of days, your travel speed is different than if you travel in units of hours.

There is no rule saying that you move slower in combat when being stealthy (though you still use an action/bonus action you could theoretically also use for dash, so that indirectly makes you slower). You can move like always while being hidden, but of course it's up to the DM to decide how likely you are to get noticed, so he can very well give +5 / -5 to passive perception depending on how far the hidden character moves.

It seems travel pace outside of combat is determined by the travel pace table.  Therefore, when initiative is not used, my general definition of out of combat, then travel pace can follow the detail provided by the travel pace table.

Does this mean a player would use the passive stealth score for the character while out of combat?  I feel this is most likely subject to DM discretion, but using the logic that passive score represents a repetitive state of activity then it would seem to apply to the situation.

If that same logic holds true, then stealth while in combat, which is rolled, is at a greater risk of failing to hiding a character.  I feel this is what allows a character to move their speed in combat while in stealth.

The OP, mentioned that the character speed was cut in half for stealth and cut in half again while looking for traps.  I don’t have my PHB with me, but isn’t the looking at maps & observing surroundings at the same speed as stealth?  I recall three rows on the travel pace chart.  Therefore, the character speed should only be reduced once to allow both searching for traps and stealth.  Of course if this were taken to the extreme it would allow a character to map a dungeon while stealthy, looking for traps, and writing a monster dissertation with great sketches of the monster structure.

But the question isn't are you slowed down by travel pace in combat.  It's are you slowed down by travel pace while stealthing in a hallway while not in combat.
