Holy Symbol Focus and Magic Initiate Feat

Hi,

If a cleric takes the magic initiate feat - Wizard, can the character use his holy symbol as a spellcasting focus for the wizard cantrips and spell that he gets from the feat?

Nope. Clerics can only use their holy symbol when casting Cleric spells.

 

In fact, it seems you can't even use Arcane Focii as material components for your Wizard spells; Component Pouches seem to be the only way to do that.

Hi,

I was thinking this over and from (my) strict reading, a cleric that takes Magic Initiate (Wizard) cannot benefit from an arcane focus at all.  I cannot find anywhere that states any character can use an arcane focus, except as a class feature - an example is the Wizard class.

 

How are your ruling it at your table?  At this point, I am preferring a strict reading because it adds an opportunity cost to using a cantrip or spell from that feat.

I figured i;d only need the paladin's holy symbol because in the PHB page 203

 

"a character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (found in chapter 5) in place of the components specified for a spell."

 

if the distinction between divine and arcane was significant in this case, i would expect something like

 

"a character can use a component pouch or a spellcasting focus (found in chapter 5) in place of the components specified fo divine or arcane spells, respectively."
