When it comes to readying actions, I like being *careful* about how the readied Action is worded. For instance, if the Action is "I attack the next goblin that comes around the corner!" and something other than a goblin shows up, you don't trigger. Compare this to "I attack the next creature that comes around the corner!" and you start including any number of beasties -- but also the potential of attacking a buddy or bystander due to a more indiscriminate mindset.
I figured that no matter what the Action, if it was not triggered then on your next turn it was basically "No harm, no foul. Nothing happened." Obviously, you wouldn't swing your sword, and you wouldn't shoot an arrow.
But spells are different. The rules (PHB 193) state that the spell is cast beforehand (i.e., when you decide to Ready it) and takes effect when the trigger occurs. So if you Ready Magic Missile at the next goblin, and the battle ends before the trigger, you're SOL. It was cast and wasn't released. I think that's bunk, if only for metagame purposes. You can ready a bow attack and not lose the ammo, but magic is just gone into the ether? Why the larger risk on magic-users?
My proprosed Houserule is that magic readies just like a handgun: you **** the hammer (get your components out, your words at the ready, your gestures in position) but you don't pull the trigger (cast the spell) until the... uh... trigger; if the trigger never takes place, you uncock the gun and put it away. Does anybody see a problem with that -- for game balance or any other reasons?
Secondarily, the Ready rules also intimates that you may continue to Concentrate on Readied spells and keep them prepared. Since concentration-breaking is so limited, does that mean your magic-user might be wandering around with this spell all day until the next combat when it can be used? But if you've Readied it for an action that doesn't happen (different combat = different circumstances) is the spell still available? |

Allow the magic user to 'release' the spell on their next action. They still have to 'use it or lose it', but at least they get to use it.
Allow the magic user to maintain concentration on the spell, and 'hold it'. They can continue to use a Ready action if they want. This one has potential for abuse, so I would either talk to the player and tell them to not abuse it, or think of some limitations. Perhaps you can't move while 'holding' the spell, or you can only hold it for X rounds (X= bonus of spellcasting attribute) |
