| #1sorednax3Aug 27, 2014 4:59:29 | So, I read every page regarding magic, including saving trows, schools, spellcasting classes, etc. What I can't find is, what, if anything, do I roll?
For example, if my spellcasting ability is Charisma, I add my proficency bonus + my Cha bonus. But what's the DN???
If attacking a creature, like a magic missle, my target number is their AC. Sometimes, they can save against my magic.
But what if I wanted to use "Dancing Lights". Do I roll a d20 +prof+abil mod? If so what's my DN???
I'm obviously showing my newbiehood, but help me out.
Are these spells automatic? Just spend a spell slot and ta-da? No roll necessary?
Also, can you share which page(s) in the Players Guide that this is specified?
Please and thank you. |

1. Automatic spells.
2. Saving throw spells.
3. "Spell attack" spells.
If the spell says "make a (melee / ranged) spell attack," it's #3. You roll proficiency + ability mod + d20. Your target is the victim's AC.
If the spell says "the target makes a saving throw" or something similar, it's #2 and you roll nothing. Your victim makes the saving throw. The victim's difficulty class (DC) is 8 + your ability mod + your proficiency.
if the spell mentions nothing about saving throws or attacks, it's automatic (#1). You don't have to roll anything unless the spell has some sort of special damage or effect roll (like sleep, magic missile, and color spray).
For example:
Magic missile is automatic (#1). You just roll the damage automatically - there's no attack.
Fireball is a saving throw (#2). The victims in the area make a saving throw and you roll your damage dice. (Note that you only roll damage dice one time and the result is the same for every victim.)
Ray of Frost is a "ranged spell attack" (#3). You make an attack roll, like shooting a bow, but use your spellcasting ability modifier and proficiency bonus. |
