How do Spell Slots for PAl 5/War 3 look/work

What happens if I go back to Paladin?

Warlocks are a special case - they don't mess with multiclass spell slots at all, you simply add them to your other spell slots.

In this case, a Warlock 3 has 2 second-level spell slots and a Paladin 5 has 4 first-level and 2 second-level slots.

A Paladin 5/Warlock 3 would thus have 4 first-level and 4 second-level spell slots.

He or she can cast any spell known or prepared out of any slot, as long as the slot is of high enough level for the spell.

If you continue advancing as a Paladin, just keep finding the spell slots per day for your Paladin level and adding the 2 second-level Warlock slots afterward.

A Paladin 7/Warlock 3 would have 4 first-level slots and 5 second-level ones.

*Technically, the Paladin cannot use Divine Smite with the two Warlock second-level spell slots ("you can expend one paladin spell slot"), but this may be something that gets overlooked or changed for the sake of consistency or simplicity.  Regardless, he or she could still cast smite spells such as branding smite using his or her Warlock slots.

~~Can a Paladin and Warlock combination even work?
A Paladin swears to uphold justice and righteousness
A Warlock might lead a cult dedicated to a demon prince, an arch devil, or an utterly alien entity - beings not typically served by clerics

~~2Chlorobutanal explanation is good, but it leaves out the important part which is Warlock's spell slots come back after a short rest.  Paladin 5 / Warlock 3 would know:

Paladin Spells:  4 first, 2 second  Take either or both of Searing Smite, Branding Smite
Warlock Spells:  4 known, 2 slots at 2nd level --> and these slots refresh on a short rest

For combats after a short rest, cast your preferred smite spell with the Warlock Slots to do an extra 2d6 damage with the 2nd level spell slots.

It looks fun to play, it also enables a number of different character concepts that are different than straight Paladin or Warlock.  At the same time it doesn't create an overpowered character.

No clear winner on the power meter either between:  Paladin 8, Warlock 8, or Paladin 5/Warlock 3.
