If an event happens that draws them back, they have to decide if what they're doing is more important. In an epic quest (LotR style), you might have a day or two as dictated by the DM. Downtime is really just something that some groups may use, but others won't. |

Not only did you have to pay through the nose to level, but you had to put in a lot of time finding masters, questing for your church, or even just looking for magical squid ink. The stories in the old DMGs made you wish you had a sprawling campaign that badass and rich in flavor, even though I imagine most campaigns, even then, were kick in the door, kill the goblins, and pick the lock.
In this edition, since you can get a decent benefit out of downtime, each DM will have to decide what the counter is to getting the language or tool proficiency. Other things could certainly be added to the list such as Area Knowledge or Contacts or side businesses and such.
One cool alternative might be to have downtime be the penalty for an absence at the gaming table. The PC misses the experience and loot, but hey, you can buy a language! It could become comical as Bob's three-levels-behind hero adds his 12th language.
It wasn't so long ago that just having enough money to level up was a huge money sink in DnD and other games.
Maybe the best game ever at handling downtime was Ars Magica.
GURPS had some pretty good rules on it to. |

| #6Archon007Aug 23, 2014 18:17:17 | Downtime is mainly used for DnD Adventure League (used to be RPGA) and the rules for it are listed what you can do with x number of downtime days. |
