When it comes to shoving the opponent or knocking them prone. It just says when you take an attack action you get a bonus action. Can you do this before you attack, knock them prone and then wail on the target?

Before.

Though you can't knock someone back, and then fireball.

Basically the way I see it is, you "declare" your attack action. But in this edition you can move around and do other stuff before during or after. So it goes like this:

Declare the Attack action

This gives you the Bonus Action Shove option

Take Bonus Action Shove

Make an Attack (which can include a melee/ranged weapon attack, or even a Shove or Grapple!) using the "hanging" Attack action.

You can move at any point before or after any of these steps! But by declaring the Attack option, you're "locked in" to that action, so the action is either used or wasted; you can't substitute it

Good point, the Divine Smite class ability does not require any form of action.

I think my point still *vaguely* stands for pretty much all spellcasting though.

Ok looks like the Paladin was wrong using his shield bash and a smite. Thjings to keep track of. Thast only happened pnce when he rolled a 20 and you get to chose to smite after hitting so its a lot of extra damage. I had a brain fart with bonus action spells and the shield bash as I am thinking of taking it as a valor bard with my next PC.

IMO Rules call on the fly (even a wrong one) probably better than stopping play to look it up.

I think that this could be a DM call on a table by table basis.

The wording suggests that the attack is needed first to count as having happened in order for there to be a "if you take the Attack action on your turn,". I am not saying that I think this is the only way to interpret this but the wording does suggest it. Some bonus actions are obvious that they can be used when ever some are quite clear that they must be used at a specific time. This one is not as clear and could be viewed eithor way.

Just a good habit to be in is if it is a item that can be interpreted more than one way double check with your DM first so you do not feel cheated in the moment and are aware in advance. DM's should also keep not of these areas and be prepared to give this info up front about how they run their game. This is a great day 0 item to go over.

It seems very similar to the way the bonus spell/cantrip works. I would allow the shove as long as it was followed by an attack, but YMMV.
