I would like help understanding the way the forgotten realms timeline is set up, I find it rather confusing at first glance and if somebody could explain how the year progression works in that world I would be very thankful.

It might help us if you could provide a link to or description of exactly what you're looking at so we can see it.

I don't have many links to anything sadly. I was reading though chapter 2 of the 4th edition forgotten realms campaign guide and then I looked on the wiki  "marking the year page"( http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Marking_the_Years ) but I still don't get how the years progression works.

You may find the 3.5 FRCG or Grand History of the Realms helpful.  Both explain Realmstime in more detail.

Short version: Besides the calender year (DR = Dales Reckoning, works the same way as real-life BC / AD), every year has a name: "Year of the Laughing Thief" or "Year of Dragons' Rage" or whatever.  The names tie in somehow to an important event from that year, but (IMntbHO) is an excuse to insert some whimsy into your game; take advantage!  Some of the Yearnames' events have been filled in already, but many are left vague so the PCs can do something that sounds approximately close to it.
