Hi all,

As title suggests, I was wondering if you could help me out? I can't seem to find the information in the PHB. If a Fighter starts a Round with his Light crossbow and shoots a distant Goblin, and then the Goblin's Turn comes and he runs up to the Fighter to attack him, does the fighter get a chance to switch out to his shield to get the +2 AC before he is attacked? Or is he stuck with the crossbow until the start of his next turn? And would the same rule apply if the Fighter had been in a Surprise Round first?

Thanks in advance.

You could have had shield and hand crossbow out at the same time, but no, it takes a full action to don a shield, and if you shot someone you are SOL on actions for that turn.  For weapons tho it only takes an 'interaction' to get one out or put it away (you get one interaction per turn, along with one each action, reaction, bonus action, and move).

so basicaly with your light crossbow, you can shoot with it. you could on the SAME round drop the crossbow and unsheet your sword with your intereaction with your environment. Then the goblin come closer you don'T have your shield, then equip your shield and pick up the crossbow and store it on your back (interactionwith environment). THen the goblin attack you but this time you got your shield.

Or instead of a shield you can drop the crossbow and unsheet a sword. the goblin come attack you, then unsheet a second sword and now you can attack the goblin twice (action and bonus action)

A goblin has a speed of 30ft, so as long as you shoot it from more than 30 ft away it will not be able to run up to you and hit you before you get a chance to equip your shield on the next turn.

Assuming there's no surprise:

Round 1:

Fighter shoots goblin with light crossbow.  Fighter can interact with one object for free to draw a sword or get their shield.

Goblin moves closer to get into melee range.  Goblin attacks if within melee range.  The fighter has no shield AC bonus.

Round 2:

If fighter has shield in hand, they use their action to don the shield and their one free object interaction to draw a longsword.

If longsword is in hand, the fighter uses their one free object interaction to get the shield and their one action to don the shield.

Goblin attacks.  The fighter does have +2 AC bonus from their shield.

Most if not all DMs allow a character to drop the crossbow for free... not considered an action or an object interaction.  Some DMs even allow you to stow weapons for free.  I believe one of the devs said a character can put away one weapon and draw a new weapon on their turn as their "one object interaction".  Don't quote me on that though.
