How much speed is possible?

There is a player in my group that is making a very fast wizard. For race he picked woodelf (35 speed) then for a feat he picked speedy +10 speed. The DM later on a roll dropped boots of speed as a treasure. The elf paid the group to let him have them.  Now he also got the spell haste.

Does all of these stack? that is like 180 speed. even with them not stacking that is 90 speed. We use a lot of grids for combat so the speed really seems to pay off.

does Haste and boots of speed stack?

his speed is 45ft.

he uses bonus actiont to give himself speed of 90ft via magic boots.

he can now move 90ft. if he takes dash action he can move 180ft. if he uses haste additional action as another dash action that is 270ft.

if he is a 2nd level rogue to that on later turns he can use cunning action to us dash again and move total of 360ft per round.

that is about 66km/h or 41 MPH.

not so much for taking fastest race, feat, class combo and magic item.

Usain Bolt's average speed on 100m world record time was 37,6 km/h.

So with spell and magic boots, it's not a big of a deal.

I don't see a problem with a fast wizard. Sure, he can cast a spell as action, increase his speed to 90ft as bonus action and move back far enough so the enemy can't counter him. If the enemy isn't that dumb, he will probably just start running away rather than keep following him. Or maybe he brought some ranged weapon with him? The constantly running wizard might also run into more enemies while running back. As DM I'd probably start to think how the enemy group will try to defeat that wizard. At first they will still follow him and die. Then one will eventually run away and tell the boss about the fast wizard. Then the enemy group will try to surround the wizard somehow, fill rooms the wizard come from so if he runs back he runs right into an ambush and so on.

I agree with the others an just want to add that a wizard that is far away from the rest of the party is a wizard that is frequently prime target for an ambush.

Or he could just teleport.

Have a recurring villian put out a Want Ad for somebody who can run very very fast.  A Monk should answer that ad.  Give the Monk all the gear the Wizard has, train him in Rogue2, then send him out "to deal with" the Wizard.  Imagine your fleeing PC's surprise when some guy catches up to him from behind

If he wants to be fast, he should just pick Aarakockra as a race. 50 ft. fly speed right from level 1.

What you should remember is that all that speed does NOT defeat a READY ACTION.

The haste and the boots of speed stack, but I'm not sure that means haste doubles the speed that the boots already doubled (for a X4) or if the haste doubles the base speed (like in 3rd, for a x3).

Either way you have a very fast wizard. Which is a nice gimmick, but it shouldn't be a problem if you take the environement in account. On a flat open field with no other enemies around, he can run away from the rest of the group and start using ranged attacks, without the enemy having much chance to reach him for melee attacks. But if there are hills, it's nice that he can get to a great distance, but those hills will block line of effect for his spells. Plus he can't see what's beyond those hill. Maybe more baddies.

In a dungeon there's not much room to maneuvre at all. If the combat is in a single large room, be may be able to run around that room three times in a round, but he won't be much further from the bad guys than with a lower speed.

And getting out of reach works well for melee, but does nothing for ranged attacks. If the enemy has an archer or mage of their own, they can still attack him.

Also, it costs him considerable resources that could have been used otherwise. Sure he's fast with haste. But that's a haste he didn't cast on the fighter for an extra attack per round. And it uses up his concentration slot and a 3rd level spell. Sure, he's fast with the boots of speed. But they're not on the feet of a monk or rogue that uses them to run through the melee to deal attacks here and there. Plus it uses an attunement slot.

Nothing to worry about.

Speed 90ft gives you 90ft movement, then dash action "adds your speed in extra movement allowance"  so plus 90ft equals 180ft, then bonus dash action (from cunning action or expeditious retreat) adds speed again for another extra 90ft movement so 270ft, then haste gives extra action dash adding 90ft again so 360ft.

No multiplying occurs.

Also could consider 2 fighter levels for added action surge cheese.

It looks like I'm in the right place. I also have a question about speed.

I need to know how fast a raven can fly 103 miles to deliver a message. The statistics in the monster manual state that the raven’s flying speed is 50 feet, making the trip take about 18 hours. If my math is correct, a speed of 50 feet per round equates to about 5 1/2 miles per hour, quite slow for something that’s flying in my opinion. When I looked up how fast a raven can fly on the Internet, I found a speed of 30-60 miles per hour. Even if I assume the raven is flying 103 miles at 30 miles per hour it still comes out to be only about 3 1/2 hours. Even if the raven “Dashed” the entire trip it would still take 9 hours, which is still a lot longer than 3 1/2.

Can anyone shed some light on this discrepancy between the real world and the game world?
