Illusions and Illusionists

Ok, first, several questions on some of the Illusion/Image Spells (Minor Illusion, Silent Image, Major Image), followed up by a question on the Illusionist's Malleable Illusions feature. Here's the relevant passages:

"Physical interactaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it..."

"...a creature that uses its action to examine the image can determine that it is an illusion with a successful Intelligence (Investigation) check..."

"...if a creature discerns the illusion for what it is, the creature can see through the image..."

1. What if the image is something that would be a bit difficult to discern whether objects phase through or not, like an area of fog or solid darkness?

2.  Does a creature that has "revealed" the image as an illusion from physical interaction count as "discerning the illusion", or would they still need to make the intel check to do that?

3. Would a "discerned illusion" no longer visually hinder a creature, in terms of cover or concealment?

4. When you "change the nature of the illusion" with Malleable Illusions, would creatures that have previously "discerned" an image also automatically "discern" the altered image?

5. And, a bit silly to ask, but does the caster count as already having "discerned" the image?

1. If you physical interact with the illusory darkness or area of fog, it is revealed to be an illusion.

2. They know it's an illusion once they physical interact with it.

3. Yes.

4. Yes.

5. Yes.

That's how I rule it anyway. Your DM may rule it differently depending on the circumstances (and so might I). Trying to make the case by taking things literally or picking apart words is pretty much folly in this game - it's going to be up to your DM to rule how things turn out.

I think what you'll find is that YMMV and you should have a conversation with your DM prior to showing up with an illusionist.

Here's my previous thread, which links to the other relevant threads I could find on this forum and might provide you with a way to organize your discussion with your DM.
