Just a quick question on spells like Inflict Wounds (just using that one as an example).

The Duration is "instantaneous" and requires a melee spell attack.

1.  If the attack misses, is the spell lost?  Or does it last until discharged on a successful hit (I'm thinking it's lost, but just wanting to verify).

2. The description says "melee" spell attack.  Does that mean you do not use your Wis Mod on the attack?  Is it based on your Dex or Str + Prof Bonus?  Or is it a normal Spell Attack roll (Wis + Pro)?

1: yes, it is lost. but that's why it does more damage then other level 1 spells. 3d10, vs 3d4+3 of magic missile.
2: yes, it's a normal attack roll. assuming wis is your spell modifier. you just need to be in short range.

Whether it's a melee or ranged spell attack, you use your class's spellcasting ability modifier and proficiency bonus.

Some exceptions include racial abilities (high elf and drow, tiefling, etc) and the feat Magic Initiate, but these all specify which ability modifier to use. So an elf cleric with a Shocking Grasp cantrip would use his intelligence modifier when making a melee spell attack with that abilitiy, but his wisdom modifier for a melee spell attack for Inflict Wounds.
