It also says: "A creature must also make this saving throw when it enters the spell's area for the first time on a turn or ends its turn there."
Does this mean that characters who enter the area and then remain there until their turns end need to make two saves, once when they enter and once when their turns end? If not, why not?
Other similar spells require a save when a character enters or when a character *starts* its turn there-- I'm trying to understand why this spell works differently, and the only practical difference between those two wordings is that it seems like this one seems written to do damage twice in one turn potentially. But that seems off to me. Any clarity would help! |

Unless I missed it, there's no general rule stating that spells can only affect a creature once in a single turn. In lieu of the discovery of such, any given spell would thus effect whenever it says it would.
Which would mean that, in this case, Insect Plague would force you to make a save if you entered its area of effect- and would do so again if, on that turn, you failed to leave its area of effect.
Spells that require a save when a character enters or when a character starts its turn there have the potential to do damage twice in one turn as well.
For example, if you starting within 15 feet of a cleric that had cast Spiritual Guardians, you have to save or take necrotic/radiant damage. If you then left the area and (for some hopefully good reason) entered the area, you would have to save again for entering the area for the first time on your turn.
The real difference between start of turn spells like Spiritual Guardians and end of turn spells like Insect Plague is that any given character has the potential to complete avoid harm from the latter (by moving out of the area of effect on their turn and staying out). |

I don't understand why it should work that way. |

Meaning, you cast the spell. The Wizard pushes them in (damage) and then out using Thunderwave The Druid uses Thorn Whip to grasp them and pull them in (damage) and then out again, if they plan it right The Monk then pushes them in (damage) The bad guy's turn starts/ends (depending on the spell) in the space (damage)
Silly, yes. Effective? Heck yes. Just don't abuse it too much because your DM might start to get ideas... |
